Meet our Sunshine Coast Carpentry Trainer and Assessor β Kip!
What Drew You To This Field?
I originally trained as a lawyer and completed a postgraduate degree before transitioning into a carpentry apprenticeship after renovating my first home.
What is your favourite module or hands-on skill to teach students?
I enjoy teaching the pitched roofs unit the most. I have an intense passion in traditional timber frames, sustainable construction (strawbale/hemp block/rammed earth) and hand pitched roofs. Teaching this unit also allows me to get nerdy about historical carpentry - have you watched 'Castle Builders' on YouTube? If not, you should! Its modern tradespeople building a castle using historical plans.
What do you love most about being a trainer?
I love being able to demonstrate the value women can bring to this industry and being able to mentor apprentices through their learning journey and help them build confidence and skills. I also particularly focus on gently educating apprentices and employers alike on ways they can promote more inclusivity onsite.
