Since the mid 1980s, the fossil deposits at Dinosaur Cove near Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road have been building a rich picture of the ancient life of the area. The group of fossils date back to around 106 million years ago and collectively represent a grouping known as "the polar dinosaurs of Australia". Otway Dinosaurs are coming to life through the passion of local landholders who have supp
orted the palaeontological research in this area over a number of years. From December 2011 to April 2012, they brought Monash University's "Wildlife of Gondwana" exhibition to Apollo Bay. Our guides will tell you the story of their discoveries. Victoria in a polar environment with a wide variety of dinosaurs and other animals living, hibernating and migrating with their various ways of coping with 3 months of a dark polar winter. The larger exhibition displays the fossil record from Australian and South American sources and will describe the Wildlife of the Great Southern Super continent, Gondwana, from 3.8 billion years to the present. It includes flora and fauna ranging from some of the world's earliest life forms, through to the dinosaurs of the Cretaceous and the megafauna and mammals of the Pleistocene. The exhibition showcases the research work of the world's leading palaeontologists, some of who have developed close personal ties with the region through their long association with Dinosaur Cove . The exhibition includes information panels, fossil and rock specimens (original and cast material) both fragmentary and full skeletons (mounted in dynamic poses), and art works depicting the palaeoenvironment.
