Cape Schanck Lighthouse
Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Constructed - 1859
Changed to electricity - 1939
Around 1859 was a hectic time for the Department of Ports and Harbors in Victoria.
Six new lighthouses were announced, including:
Cape Schanck
Wilsons Promontory
Port Albert
Portland Bay
Port Fairy
Warrnambool.
This period was also the start of the "Chance Brothers" tradition.
The Cape Schanck lens was just one of the first 20 new lenses to come out of the Birmingham factory and was the first of a few hundred that would eventually make the long trip from the UK to Australia.
And that same lens still remains in place and in service at Cape Schanck today.

04/12/2025

So sorry there will be NO CAPE SCHANCK LIGHTHOUSE TOURS on SUNDAY 7TH DECEMBER 2025 as The Lady of History staff will be in Melbourne to support the ‘Save Our Heritage Fleet Ships’ Protest and Regatta on Victoria Harbour, Docklands.
Due to apartment building in Docklands the precious Heritage fleet of 3 ships – the replica of the 1835 Enterprize, the 1903 Alma Doepel and the 1932 Steam Tug Wattle are to be evicted from Docklands with no permanent place to go to. These ships are a highlight of the Docklands precinct and it will be a great loss to Melbourne’s maritime history if they cannot be docked there in the future.
We will be running Cape Schanck Tower Climb tours on both Friday 5 December 2025 11am - 1pm and on Saturday 6 December 2025 11am - 4pm. Book online at Book online at www.trybooking.com/CZEGK or search Cape Schanck.
We will also be back running Cape Schanck Lighthouse tours on Friday 12, Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 December 2025.
