What can art reveal about life behind the barbed wire?
Join Dr Seumas Spark for a fascinating exploration of the extraordinary visual record created by the Dunera internees — artwork that offers vivid and often surprising insights into life, loss, creativity and resilience during wartime.

The Dunera internees included around 2,500 Jewish refugees from N**i Germany and Austria, who were deported to Australia in 1940 after being treated as enemy aliens by the British. Despite their internment, they created a remarkable cultural and intellectual world, establishing libraries, schools, orchestras, theatre groups, religious services and sporting activities.

This special talk will focus on two artists in particular: Robert Hofmann, a celebrated portrait artist and Prix de Rome winner, and Hans Rothe, a sharp-eyed cartoonist whose work captured prejudice and political folly with biting insight.

Discover how these artworks help bring the Dunera story to life — and reveal the creativity and humanity that endured even in extraordinary circumstances. A fascinating evening exploring an important chapter in both Jewish and Australian history.

In times of uncertainty and distress, finding a moment to pause, breathe and reconnect can be more important than ever.

Join Christopher Latham OAM, Professor David Slucki and Dr Merav Carmeli for a special Music & Healing session — an evening of music, meditation, imagery and words designed to create space for reflection, calm and renewal.

🎻 Christopher will perform beautiful and reflective pieces on the violin, accompanied by calming visual imagery, and lead a guided meditation.
📖 David and Merav will share carefully selected texts, creating moments for thought and connection.

Together, live music, mindfulness, imagery and words will offer an opportunity to step away from the noise and pressures of everyday life and experience the restorative power of music. Step into a remarkable chapter of modern Jewish history.

Until the 1950s, Egypt was home to a vibrant and diverse Jewish community. Then, almost overnight, thousands of Jews were forced to leave everything behind.

Join internationally acclaimed scholar Professor Karen E. H. Skinazi as she uncovers the extraordinary story of the expulsion of Egypt's Jews during the 1956 Suez Crisis. Drawing on archival research and personal testimonies, she'll explore their journey to Britain, their resilience in rebuilding their lives, and the lasting impact they and their descendants have had on Jewish communities in Britain and Australia.

This fascinating talk sheds light on a little-known story of exile, survival and belonging that continues to resonate today.
