In addition to training, fighting fires and responding to other emergencies, our members also volunteer and take on management and leadership roles through the brigade management committee. Positions such as chairman, secretary and treasurer.

These positions are made vacant at our upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday 29th September to be held at our station commencing at 7pm, to allow for voting and filling of these positions for the next 2 year period.

This public post addresses our compulsory requirement to advise the public of our AGM.

🔥 Hazard Reduction Burns

It’s been a busy few weeks for the brigade, with crews taking advantage of favourable conditions to complete several hazard reduction burns across the local area.

Crews completed a broad acre burn at Gleneagle, reducing grass fuel loads, along with large pile burns at Glenlogan, Veresdale and Cedar Vale to safely burn timber piles prepared by local landowners.

At Kooralbyn, crews completed the first of several planned stages of a larger hazard reduction burn. Crews worked around structures and down the hillside, reducing grass and other fuels to create a lower-fuel buffer around the buildings ahead of the fire season.

A big thanks to Kooralbyn Auxiliary for assisting, and to the Remote Area Firefighting Team (RAFT) for cutting containment lines in preparation for the next stages.

Along with reducing fuel loads ahead of the upcoming fire season, these burns provide valuable hands-on training for our members. Newer members had the opportunity to practise using drip torches, observe fire behaviour and build their understanding of how planned burning can be used to reduce bushfire risk.

🚒 Volunteer Training Spotlight: Dry Firefighting

Not every bushfire is fought with water.

This week, our members refreshed their knowledge of dry firefighting - The techniques used to contain and suppress bushfires using hand tools, machinery and well-planned tactics.

The session began with a theory session and desktop scenario where members worked through a realistic bushfire incident, discussing fire behaviour, available resources, and the tactics that could be called upon to safely contain the fire.

This included the role of heavy machinery, bushfire suppression tactics, and the principles behind backburning. These discussions are an important part of training, helping firefighters develop the judgement and decision-making skills needed on the fireground.

We then headed outside to put those plans into practice.

Members practised:
Constructing hand control lines
Using rakehoes, beaters and blowers safely and effectively

Every skill we practise helps make our brigade safer, more capable, and better prepared to protect our community this bushfire season.

🚒 Bushfire season is approaching… could you be our next volunteer firefighter?

As we head towards another bushfire season, our brigade is preparing for the months ahead through training, equipment checks, and ensuring we're ready to respond when our community needs us.

But we're always looking for more people to join the team.

At Woodhill Rural Fire Brigade, our members come from all walks of life; Tradies, office workers, parents, students and retirees. What brings us together is a shared commitment to protecting our community.

Being a volunteer firefighter is about much more than fighting fires. It's about learning practical skills, working in a supportive team, challenging yourself, and making a real difference when it matters most.

Over the coming weeks, we'll take you behind the scenes and share a series of short posts showcasing the training we receive and what it's really like to be a Woodhill Rural Fire Brigade volunteer. We'll cover everything from using firefighting equipment and reading fire behaviour, to communications, teamwork, vehicle operations, and much more.
Whether you're simply curious or have been thinking about volunteering for a while, we invite you to follow along and discover what being part of the brigade is all about.

By the end of the series, you might just see yourself wearing the yellow.

Are you planning on burning on your property this winter?

With the wet weather clearing up its time to prepare for Fire Season. However with temperatures dropping the chances for frosts bring changing conditions so the window for preparation is closing fast. Grasslands drying out and dying off brings faster moving grass fires.

If you are planning on doing a clean up before Fire Season and burning your acreage, piles of green waste or want consultation on doing so its best to get in touch with your local Fire Warden. Fire Wardens issue permits to burn and can help organise assistance from your local brigade if the job is to big for you to handle on your own.
