Due to the lack of rain and the current weather forecast Suspension of Permit to Light fires has been extended to 2359 Friday October 23rd 2026.

We have sent crews to this fire throughout the long weekend.

A beautiful lady and member of the public even thanked one of our crews by purchasing them ice-creams at BP Gatton on their way home after a long day in the field.

SUSPENSION OF PERMIT TO LIGHT FIRE

From 0001 hours Saturday the 26th of September all permits to light fires in the Scenic Rim are suspended. Permits will resume as of 0001 hours Saturday the 10th of October.

The suspension also covers Ipswich, Logan, Somerset and Lockyer Valley city council regions and the time frame may vary with changes in weather.

The suspension is a result of changing fire dangers in the area and growing numbers of escaped permitted burns which puts addition demand on resources in these areas.

Although this is not a fire ban we ask that everybody remain vigilant and use common sense with fire. Conditions are very dry and allow for fast moving grass fires, so please think carefully about using fire at this time.

The window for safe hazard reduction burns is definately closed at this point so we as a brigade will not be taking any new applications for Hazard Reduction Burns.

In Queensland, the Permit to Light Fire system is managed by a network of Fire Wardens. In rural areas, Fire Wardens are members of the Rural Fire Service Queensland and could be a staff member or a volunteer. In more urban areas, the Fire Warden could be the local fire station. Today the 16th of September is Yellow Ribbon Day 🎗

A day to say thank you to the Rural Fire Service Queensland volunteers who sacrifice weekends, weeknights, and time with families and continue to show up to educate and protect our community.

It has already been a busy start to the Fire Season with our Woodhill crews helping to prepare properties to reduce fire impact, conduct fuel reduction burns and respond to permitted burns that had escaped containment. We ask that everybody remain vigilant over the coming weeks as we head towards a hot summer.

Lastly on Yellow Ribbon Day we at the Woodhill Rural Fire Brigade would like to thank our families who support us from behind the scenes allowing us to continue to protect our patch of the Scenic Rim.

!!!!!! ALL PERMITS CANCELLED !!!!!!

As of 0001 hours Sunday the 6th of September all current Fire Permits are cancelled. Due to the current dry weather conditions and the amount of controlled burns that have been escaping all permits will need to be reissued after conditions improve.

There is no Fire Ban in our area at this time. If you have any questions about your permit get in touch with the Fire Warden that has issued it to you. And if you see a fire report it to triple zero or 112 immediately.

In addition to training, fighting fires and responding to other emergencies, our members also volunteer and take on management and leadership roles through the brigade management committee. Positions such as chairman, secretary and treasurer.

These positions are made vacant at our upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday 29th September to be held at our station commencing at 7pm, to allow for voting and filling of these positions for the next 2 year period.

🔥 Hazard Reduction Burns

It’s been a busy few weeks for the brigade, with crews taking advantage of favourable conditions to complete several hazard reduction burns across the local area.

Crews completed a broad acre burn at Gleneagle, reducing grass fuel loads, along with large pile burns at Glenlogan, Veresdale and Cedar Vale to safely burn timber piles prepared by local landowners.

At Kooralbyn, crews completed the first of several planned stages of a larger hazard reduction burn. Crews worked around structures and down the hillside, reducing grass and other fuels to create a lower-fuel buffer around the buildings ahead of the fire season.

A big thanks to Kooralbyn Auxiliary for assisting, and to the Remote Area Firefighting Team (RAFT) for cutting containment lines in preparation for the next stages.

Along with reducing fuel loads ahead of the upcoming fire season, these burns provide valuable hands-on training for our members. Newer members had the opportunity to practise using drip torches, observe fire behaviour and build their understanding of how planned burning can be used to reduce bushfire risk.

🚒 Volunteer Training Spotlight: Dry Firefighting

Not every bushfire is fought with water.

This week, our members refreshed their knowledge of dry firefighting - The techniques used to contain and suppress bushfires using hand tools, machinery and well-planned tactics.

The session began with a theory session and desktop scenario where members worked through a realistic bushfire incident, discussing fire behaviour, available resources, and the tactics that could be called upon to safely contain the fire.

This included the role of heavy machinery, bushfire suppression tactics, and the principles behind backburning. These discussions are an important part of training, helping firefighters develop the judgement and decision-making skills needed on the fireground.

We then headed outside to put those plans into practice.

Constructing hand control lines
Using rakehoes, beaters and blowers safely and effectively

Every skill we practise helps make our brigade safer, more capable, and better prepared to protect our community this bushfire season.

🚒 Bushfire season is approaching… could you be our next volunteer firefighter?

As we head towards another bushfire season, our brigade is preparing for the months ahead through training, equipment checks, and ensuring we're ready to respond when our community needs us.

But we're always looking for more people to join the team.

At Woodhill Rural Fire Brigade, our members come from all walks of life; Tradies, office workers, parents, students and retirees. What brings us together is a shared commitment to protecting our community.

Being a volunteer firefighter is about much more than fighting fires. It's about learning practical skills, working in a supportive team, challenging yourself, and making a real difference when it matters most.

Over the coming weeks, we'll take you behind the scenes and share a series of short posts showcasing the training we receive and what it's really like to be a Woodhill Rural Fire Brigade volunteer. We'll cover everything from using firefighting equipment and reading fire behaviour, to communications, teamwork, vehicle operations, and much more.
Whether you're simply curious or have been thinking about volunteering for a while, we invite you to follow along and discover what being part of the brigade is all about.
