BUSH FIRE PREPARATION: PLAN FOR PETS, ANIMALS & NATIVE WILDLIFE

Bush Fire Survival Plan For Pets: 🐾📝

• Plan where you’ll go and how you’ll safely transport your animals.

• Have a backup person who can help if you can’t, and make sure they have a copy of your plan.

• Practise before an emergency using carriers, crates, trailers or floats. Be ready to go with up-to-date identification, food, water, leads, carriers and other essentials. Keep a copy of your pet’s microchip number, veterinary records and details of any medications they require.

• For livestock and larger animals, prepare a safe area with secure fencing, multiple easy-to-access routes and minimal flammable material. Make sure you have enough accessible feed and water for at least 3–7 days, or longer if required.

• If you evacuate, take your pets with you. Keep cats and dogs under control where possible so native wildlife can move safely through your property.

Helping Native Wildlife During Bush Fires: 🦘

During and after bush fires, wildlife may be injured, displaced, dehydrated or suffering from smoke inhalation or burns. If you find sick, injured or orphaned wildlife:

• Contact a local vet or licensed wildlife rescue group and record exactly where you found the animal. This can help reunite young wildlife with their parents and return rescued animals to their own territory.

• Injured wildlife may require specialist care. Contact a vet or licensed wildlife rescue group for advice before attempting to handle or rescue an animal.

• If you’re concerned an injured animal is hungry or dehydrated, avoid giving it food or water unless advised by a vet or wildlife carer. Native animals have specialised diets, and feeding them the wrong food, especially when they’re injured or in shock, can cause serious harm.

Plan ahead, put safety first and follow the advice of emergency services. Being prepared can help keep you, your pets and animals safe if a bush fire threatens.

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning on the Central Coast.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

You’ve heard us speaking on the radio during emergencies… now it’s time to tune in and meet some of the volunteers behind those voices in the Central Coast community!

Just like the incidents we respond to, there’s a range of voices you’ll hear coming from our communications room. Every voice plays an important part in keeping our crews connected, supporting the response and helping our community.

Turn up the volume! We’re looking for new volunteers aged 18+ to join our Central Coast Communications Brigade at the Emergency Fire Control Centre in Charmhaven. 🔥

We’re the link between crews on the fireground and the Operations and Control teams behind the scenes, helping keep information and resources moving when they’re needed most.

And the best part? You don’t need any previous experience! We’ll teach you everything you need to know. You don’t have to fight fires to be part of the action. "We look forward to hearing from you".

A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time and effort to support Get Ready Weekend on Sunday 20th September at Central Coast Charmhaven Fire Control Centre.

The day was a great way to connect with our local community, share important information and encourage everyone to start preparing for the upcoming bush fire season.
