Severe Weather Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL For people in parts of Peninsula, Gulf Country, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:59 am Friday, 6 March 2026.

Heavy rainfall easing over the North Tropical Coast, redeveloping about the northern interior this evening.

Weather Situation: Tropical Low 29U is located just offshore of Cairns, with the expectation to cross the coast somewhere between Cairns and Ingham over the next few hours. The monsoon trough extends inland from this low, and will become the focus of heavy rainfall into the evening and overnight period about the northern interior. The monsoon trough is expected to weaken on Saturday morning and with it decrease the risk of widespread heavy rainfall.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop over parts of the northern inland this evening. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 70 and 100 mm are likely, with isolated totals up to 130 mm possible.

Heavy to intense rainfall is no longer expected about coastal parts of the northeast, so the warning for these parts has been CANCELLED.

A slight risk of locally heavy rainfall still persists for coastal parts of northeast and central Queensland this evening and into Saturday morning, however. If heavy rainfall is expected to develop here, then a Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued for the affected areas.

Heavy rainfall is expected to ease about the warning area during Saturday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Georgetown, Croydon, Forsayth, Mount Garnet, Chillagoe and Einasleigh.

Heavy to intense rainfall was observed over parts of northeast Queensland on Thursday, but no severe observations have been recorded so far today.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

TROPICAL LOW 29U KEY MESSAGES

**As at 11:34am Thursday, 5 March 2026**

Tropical low 29U will continue with its west-southwest track towards the north Queensland coast during today. This system is now a reduced chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone before crossing the coast, between about Cairns and Townsville, during Friday.

Heavy to locally intense rain, which will lead to an increased risk of flash flooding and localised landslides, is forecast to develop about the coast and ranges between Hope Vale and Port Douglas during today. This activity will continue into Friday, while extending through the northern interior of the state and further south along the coast towards Bowen.

Rain areas with locally heavy falls should extend more broadly across northern and eastern Queensland over the weekend and into early next week, potentially even reaching parts of western Queensland, though this will be highly dependent on the future movement and development of the monsoon trough and tropical low 29U.

A Flood Watch is current for numerous catchments across northern and central Queensland – Minor to Moderate flooding is generally expected, though localised Major flooding cannot be discounted about some tropical east coast catchments given they are generally saturated and will respond rapidly to any heavy rainfall associated with the tropical low.

Flood Warnings remain current for a number of other catchments across northwest and western Queensland.
