The publicity that the council fur ban is receiving sends a strong message that cruelty is not fashionable. There are innovative, cruelty free alternatives, because fur stripped from the bodies of exploited animals has lost all social licence and so, with the council ban setting the stage, let us all choose the alternatives, to save animals from pain, suffering and death!

Northern Beaches Council has banned the sale of animal fur at market stalls.

Today’s news … it is shocking that people place themselves at the centre of many decisions and cannot think about the fact that road works, rubbish and rates are forever an issue while banning the abhorrent sale of fur from abused and tortured animals bred and kept in cages from overseas fur farms is an actionable and positive move to make. Like a bit of sunlight in an ongoing storm.

Northern Beaches Council voted to ban the sale of fur products on council-owned land and at council-managed events

On Tuesday 19th May, Northern Beaches Council will vote on the motion to ban the sale of animal fur on council land.

Councillors Ethan Hrnjak and Robert Giltinan are putting forward Motion 17/2026, A Fur-Free Northern Beaches, which would prohibit the sale of fur products at council-owned or managed markets, events, and community spaces.

We invite you to join Louise Ward from Four Paws and NB Animal Justice Party member Susan Sorensen to support the Councillors who are putting this motion forward. The more of us there, the more the councillors will know that a fur ban is the way to go.

Please note: Under new state laws, we cannot enter the council meeting with corflutes, signs, or politically branded shirts.

Congratulations to Lucy Culliton, supermum to seven rescued greyhounds.

She's also one of "Australia's most beloved artists", who has just won the $40,000 Sulman Prize for a portrait of one of those dogs, Toolah.

Lucy said: "This painting of Toolah means so much to me. Besides painting, I rescure animals in need. Toolah is one of seven greyhounds who live with me that come from the greyhound racing industry. This is my quiet protest against greyhound racing."

"I'm an animal rights person, and I hate the greyhound racing industry."

Her artist statement said: "This chair is Toolah’s favourite spot to sleep while I paint in the studio. I love how she camouflages herself into the upholstery of the chair. At the time, I was painting large Monaro grass paintings in a matching palette, so I had to include one."

Lucy also regretted that Toolah couldn't share the accolades at the art gallery: "She's very social, she loves people, and she would have loved to say woof to everyone. She'll get all the hugs and kisses when I get home."

The Sulman Prize judge said the painting "generously offers audiences a tender moment of gorgeousness from Lucy's life. Just wow!"

It is sobering to see listed that Fauna protection was considered and factored into the plans as part of the Wakehurst Parkway Improvements Project. Works are to begin mid-2026 by Ertech. The Road Kill rates of animals is astronomical and we advocate for all works that are new and/or upgrades to take into account how native wildlife can be protected from vehicle strike. But so much more needs to be done to enable human and non-human animals to co-exist on the disappearing land we all find ourselves living on.
