Despite the easing of restrictions across much of the state, the Bush Fire Danger Period remains in place across the Mid-Western area due to areas of dry and increased fuel loads.

Fire permits are still required for any burning activities until midnight, 30 April 2026 and it is important that residents continue to take a cautious and well-prepared approach to burning activities.

Across the district, we have had four grass fires in the last week which had the potential to threaten property if it wasn’t for the quick response of RFS volunteers.

Residents planning to burn off can request a permit and notify their local brigade using the online tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or contact the Fire Control Centre on (02) 6370 9800.

Clandulla RFS and Rylstone RFS were called to bush alight on Quarry Road Kandos early this morning.

A good response by both brigades, followed up by heavy machinery support from Mudgee resulted in this fire being blacked out and fully contained by early afternoon.

As always, we appreciate and thank all our members who turn out at any time of the day or night.

This morning the girls in both brigades set the standard for hard work and commitment to the task at hand.

A Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) is in place from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow night.

During a Total Fire Ban you cannot light, maintain or use a fire in the open, or to carry out any activity in the open that causes, or is likely to cause, a fire.

With lightning ⚡️ across the district yesterday and more predicted for this afternoon, landowners need to check their properties.

A change this afternoon will thankfully bring a reprieve from the heat we’ve been experiencing but higher winds and lower humidity will push the fire danger rating into Extreme 🟧.

Thankfully overall fire conditions are easing for tomorrow but there is a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Today the Mudgee Airport recorded wind gusts of over 60km/hr and a maximum temperature of 36 degrees. We are grateful that under these conditions, a fire didn’t start locally. ☺️ 😅

⚡️ Lightning causing fires 🔥

Over the last few days, local RFS volunteers have responded to a number of tree, grass and bush fires as a result of the lightning.

Lightning strikes can smoulder in trees for a considerable amount of time before being noticed. With fire conditions worsening later in the week, getting onto these ignitions early means they won’t cause us greater issues on hotter and winder days.

Landowners are urged to check their properties.
