Northern and Yorke Landscape Board

Northern and Yorke Landscape Board Caring for land, water and nature that sustain our communities and industries in South Australia's Northern and Yorke region.

Managing our landscapes is about working together to ensure that the needs of the community, industries and the environment are balanced in a way that is sustainable. The Northern and Yorke Landscape Board is one of eight landscape boards across South Australia that work alongside community members and stakeholders to sustainably manage our natural resources, with a focus on soil, water, pest plan

ts and animals, and biodiversity. The Northern and Yorke region extends for 38,500 square kilometres. It is a varied and productive portion of South Australia and includes approximately 1300km of coastline and adjacent marine areas. The region encompasses the Yorke Peninsula, significant areas of Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent, the southern Flinders Ranges, parts of the Rangelands, the Mid North, the northern Mount Lofty Ranges, the Barossa and northern Adelaide Plains. It supports a population of approximately 150,000 people who reside in agricultural, coastal and urban communities. It also welcomes a large number of visitors each year to destinations that include Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley and the Southern Flinders Ranges. The region includes traditional Aboriginal lands of the Kaurna, Narrunga, Ngadjuri, Nukunu, Kaurna and Peramangk people. The major urban centres are Port Pirie, Gawler, Nuriootpa, Clare, Burra, Peterborough, Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo. Natural resources underpin a range of industries. Approximately 80% of the region is under agricultural cropping and grazing production contributing a quarter of South Australia's agricultural earnings. The region embraces the major Barossa Valley and Clare Valley wine growing regions, and supports significant mining and mineral processing activities, fishing, aquaculture, forestry, horticulture and tourism.

We're excited to have helped make this one happen.

Nukunu Elder Darryl Thomas visited Port Pirie West Primary during Reconciliation Week to share stories, discuss wooden artefacts and begin carving a coolamon, known as a Piti in Nukunu language.

Has your dam been holding out on you?

Dams with Benefits is a free field day at Mintaro on Wednesday 17 June, 9:00am to 12:00pm, and it might change how you look at every dam on your property.

Better water quality, stronger livestock performance, more biodiversity on-farm. The research from the Sustainable Farms initiative (Australian National University) and the Ripple Effect project (Adelaide University) shows what's possible when dams are managed well. We'll walk through it on the ground.

Bring a water sample. We'll test it for salinity and pH on the spot.

Free to attend, registration required. Link below 👇

Creeks, critters and climate ready gardens 💧🌱 come for a workshop, stay for the festival 🌿.

We’re running some free workshops at the inaugural Sustainability Festival in Clare on June 20.

Kick things off with our water workshop or learn how to build a native garden that actually thrives here - then fall headfirst into a full day of sustainability goodness.

In the midst of rising living costs, ongoing drought and growing conversations around waste and sustainability, a small group of volunteers banded together to host a local sustainability festival for everyday people looking for practical ways to waste less, save money and live a little more sustainably without turning life upside down.

A whole whole festival of local sustainability ideas - food, fashion, farming and fixing stuff instead of chucking it.

Have you ever looked at a pelican and wondered how you’d measure up? 🦅

In Price, you can put it to the test for yourself. Price Progress Association has created a new interactive feature with support from Grassroots Grants, letting people compare their wingspan with some of the region's coastal birds.

It’s a fun, creative way to get people thinking about coastal birdlife, while building a better understanding of the species that are part of the local environment.

Projects like this show how small ideas can make a space more engaging, while helping communities learn about and connect with their landscape.

Grassroots Grants support local groups to bring ideas like this to life.

Desalination can be a useful option when water quality is limiting productivity, but working out if it is the right fit is not always straightforward. It often comes down to understanding what is involved, from upfront costs and ongoing maintenance through to how the water can actually be used on your property.

For many landholders, it is about weighing up whether treating saline water can create a more reliable supply for stock, vineyards, or household use, and what that looks like in practice.

Last month, we ran a series of practical workshops with Craig from Rowater Australia and Mark from Portable Solar Stations to step through these considerations. Participants were able to see a solar-powered desalination unit in action, test their own water, and talk through real-world considerations like system sizing, water quality targets, and ongoing upkeep.

The Eden Valley workshop was hosted on Phil Lehmann’s property, where he generously opened the gates and shared his desalination setup and experience.

It was a good chance to have those one-on-one conversations and explore what desalination might look like in different situations across the region.

If you are considering desalination or want to understand whether it could work for your property, feel free to get in touch with our team.

We’re teaming up with Hart Field-Site Group Inc to host a free revegetation workshop and planting day on Wednesday 10 June.

Come along, lend a hand, and walk away with some practical ideas you can try on your own place. We’ll be putting a range of native species in the ground, from grasses and understorey plants through to larger trees, all selected to suit the site.

Our ecologists will be there sharing advice on choosing the right species, getting plants established, and designing revegetation that supports both production and biodiversity. If you’re not keen to plant, you can drop in, take a look around and ask any questions.

Stay for an hour or the morning, or come for the whole day. Lunch is included.
