There’s a magic little window at every wedding that no one really talks about.

The ceremony is done.

For me, this is the moment where I switch hats.

As a celebrant, I get to step back and reflect —
Did the story land?
Did the couple feel seen?
Did it feel like them?

And as an MC, this is where the real prep begins.
Reading the room.
Checking the run sheet.
Syncing with the venue and vendors.
Getting a feel for the energy so the reception flows, not forces.

It’s relaxed. It’s fun. It’s intentional.
And when it’s done right, the night just works.

This space between ceremony and reception?
It’s where great weddings are quietly set up for success.

Being a great MC isn’t about holding a microphone.
It’s about holding the room.

Reading energy.
Managing timing without killing momentum.
Knowing when to lift the mood… and when to get out of the way.

And yes — being funny helps.
But the right kind of funny.

Not jokes for the sake of it.
Not stealing the spotlight.
Humour that relaxes the room, brings people together, and makes everyone feel like they’re in safe hands.

Most people don’t see the pressure of the role.
They only notice when it’s done badly — awkward pauses, forced laughs, moments that drag.

I love MC work because it sits at the intersection of leadership, storytelling, timing and warmth. Years of speaking, coaching, live events and real-world experience have taught me how to adapt on the fly, keep things flowing, and make a room feel comfortable — even when plans change (because they always do).

An MC’s job is simple to describe and hard to master:
make it feel effortless.

That’s the work.
And I take it seriously — without ever taking myself too seriously.

That quiet moment before everything changes.
The guests are seated.
The groom’s trying to remember how to breathe.
The groomsmen are suddenly very serious.

And we’re all waiting… because the most important person in the room hasn’t arrived yet.

Being both celebrant and MC means I get a front-row seat to the nerves, the laughter, and the deep exhale when the bride finally appears. This is the moment I love most — when the story is about to begin.

For those who don’t know me, I’m Gary, a Brisbane-based Marriage Celebrant, MC, and Speaker, working with couples who want their wedding to feel calm, meaningful, and genuinely reflective of who they are.

I bring a grounded, professional presence to ceremonies and receptions, with just enough humour and warmth to keep things human. Not awkward, not over-produced.
