🔥 FIRE SEASON IS UPON US, CLARKEFIELD! 🚒

As temperatures rise and vegetation begins to dry out, today was a timely reminder that fire season is well and truly on our doorstep!

🚨 A BUSY SATURDAY FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS

At approximately 2:30pm today, Clarkefield Fire Brigade was paged to assist our neighbours at Wildwood, after a burn-off escaped control and spread into difficult-to-access terrain.

Working alongside numerous CFA brigades, our crews assisted in attacking the main fire before remaining on scene for approximately five hours, helping bring the incident under control. Firefighting aircraft operating out of Essendon Airport also provided valuable support from above. 🚁

Our tanker returned to the station around 8pm, but the break didn't last long!

Just an hour later, our volunteers were back out the door responding to another reported burn-off out of control.

Thankfully, this turned out to be a false alarm with good intent! We'd always rather respond early and find everything is okay than have a fire go unreported. If you see smoke or fire that concerns you, call 000.

🏉🔥 GRAND FINAL + BBQ = A PRETTY GOOD COMBO!

The AFL Grand Final long weekend is here, and for plenty of us that means one thing, firing up the BBQ! 🥩🌭

Whether you’re watching the footy at home, having a few mates around or heading away for the long weekend, make sure fire safety is part of the plan.

Before you get cooking, check the conditions and any fire restrictions that apply where you are.

🔥 Keep your BBQ clear of dry grass and anything that can burn.
🔥 Never leave it unattended while it’s alight.
🔥 Make sure you have water nearby.
🔥 Check your gas bottle, hoses and connections before lighting up.
🔥 When you’re finished, make sure everything is completely extinguished and safe.

And remember, restrictions around BBQs can change depending on Fire Danger Period and Total Fire Ban conditions.

Enjoy the footy, enjoy the long weekend and enjoy the snags, just don’t give us a reason to miss the game! 🚒🏉

🔥 Would you actually leave early?

A recent CFA survey found 88% of Victorians surveyed in bushfire-prone areas agreed that leaving early is the safest option.

But 81% indicated they were unlikely to leave until fire was already threatening the landscape.

That’s the difference between knowing what to do and acting early enough.

Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts, not waiting until you can see flames, smell smoke or see a fire truck coming down your road.

This is where knowing the Fire Danger Rating matters.

Fire Danger Ratings can change daily throughout the warmer months and should form part of your decision about what you and your family will do.

🟢 Moderate
🟡 High
🟠 Extreme
🔴 Catastrophic

Whether you’re living, working or travelling anywhere in Victoria this summer, know your fire weather district, check the rating and understand what it means for you.

And don’t rely on a fire truck being there. CFA’s survey found 63% believed they were likely or very likely to receive assistance from a fire truck to defend their property.

During a major fire, emergency services cannot guarantee a truck will be at every property.

🔥 Know when you’ll leave.

🔥 Give fire less fuel.

We’ve seen firsthand around Clarkefield just how quickly fire can travel when it gets a run through dry grass and vegetation.

Creating and maintaining firebreaks is one way you can help reduce the risk around your property. By reducing available fuel, firebreaks can help reduce fire intensity and provide separation between vegetation and the things you want to protect.

On days when it’s safe to do so, mow, slash, graze or spray grass around your home, sheds and other assets, and maintain appropriate fuel breaks. 🌾🚜

A firebreak doesn’t guarantee a fire will stop. Under severe conditions, fire and embers can cross breaks, but reducing fuel around your property can make a difference.

Don’t wait for the first hot day.

🐶 They’re part of the family, so they need to be part of your fire plan too!

When preparing for fire season, don’t forget to plan for your pets and animals. 🐱🐰

Having food, water, medications, bedding, leads or carriers and safe transportation ready to go can make leaving early much easier and less stressful for everyone.

Think about where your pets will go, how you’ll transport them and what you’ll need if you can’t return home.

🔥 Your fire plan should include every member of the family, including the four-legged ones.

🔥 Preparation can make all the difference.

This incredible image was taken following the Mount Mercer fires on 9 January.

Meredith residents Jeff and Marg Cooper had prepared their property ahead of fire season, including installing 35 sprinklers in a horseshoe pattern around their garden to create a green belt and upgrading pumps drawing water from their dam. 🚿🌿

When fire impacted the area, their preparation helped protect their home.

With the Fire Danger Period approaching, this is a powerful reminder that now is the time to prepare, not when the first hot day arrives.

Clear up around your property, review your fire plan, understand your water supply and know what you will do if fire threatens.

🔥 This started as a burn-off.

If you’re preparing your property for fire season with a burn-off, make sure you register it first!

Registering your burn lets emergency services know what’s happening and can help avoid unnecessary callouts when smoke or flames are reported. 🚒

It’s quick and easy to register your burn-off at firepermits.vic.gov.au.

Before lighting up, always check current conditions, local restrictions and whether a permit is required.

Prepare early, burn safely and register your burn. 🔥🍂

🚒 WE’RE BACK! 👋🔥

It’s been quiet here since 5 July! While our socials have had a break, it’s been a hectic couple of months off the fireground at Clarkefield Fire Brigade.

We recently held our Presentation Dinner, where multiple members received their National Medal, alongside other awards recognising some fantastic achievements and years of service.

We also missed our yearly wrap-up! Over the past 12 months, Clarkefield responded to 58 calls. It might not sound particularly busy, but it was definitely Clarkefield busy!

⚠️ 1 hazardous incident

Some highlights from the year included funding from Qantas for our new Thermal Imaging Camera, support from Australia Post, and a Bendigo Bank grant for a washing machine and Milwaukee tools.

Our members also trained at VEMTC Central Highlands in Ballan, joined strike teams to Harcourt on multiple occasions and deployed to Charlton.

Then, of course, there was the big Clarkefield fire and the weeks that followed. Our members showed an incredible all hands on deck attitude, helping our community through the incident and supporting the recovery afterwards.

There were also plenty of Sunday morning training sessions, laughs, learning and bonding between our members.

🔥 WHY THE BREAK?

The upcoming fire season is shaping up to be a concerning one. We thought taking a short break now would give us a chance to recharge before summer and be ready for what could be a busy few months.

We want to keep our community informed throughout the season without burning ourselves out before it even begins.

Expect fire updates, hot day announcements, Fire Danger Rating information, community information sessions, preparedness advice and plenty more.

Thank you for the ongoing support of our little brigade. We’re looking forward to sharing upcoming events, both locally and across our group.

We’re back, recharged and ready for what’s ahead! 🚒🔥
