2026 Census Tuesday 11 August 2026.
Information for people who need extra support and people living with disability.

Every 5 years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) runs the Census. It collects information on every person and household in Australia.
Information from the Census helps planning for things like public transport, schools and local support services.
This year the Census is happening on Tuesday 11 August. You might have already received a letter in the mail about this.

The ABS wants to make sure everyone is included in the Census. They’ve created resources to support people with disability to take part.

The resources include Easy Read factsheets, Auslan videos and other accessible formats. You can also contact the ABS to order the Census form in braille or large print.

A group of payments for parents or guardians of children who can't go to a local state school. This could be because of geographical isolation, disability or special needs.

To get this, your child must meet specific living, age and study requirements. They also need to meet one of the following:

is geographically isolated
has a disability or special education need
has no reasonable access to a government school.

More than 57 million people worldwide are living with dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases diagnosed each year. Alzheimer's disease accounts for an estimated 60 to 70 per cent of all dementia cases. The new guidance updates WHO's 2019 recommendations and reflects the latest evidence on preventing cognitive decline across the life course.
The agency recommends:
- Regular physical activity
- Stopping to***co use
- Reducing alcohol consumption
- Eating a healthy diet

It also highlights the importance of cognitive training, social engagement and managing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

For the first time, WHO also recommends reducing exposure to air pollution as part of dementia prevention strategies. The use of hearing aids may also help lower dementia risk in some people.

However, WHO advises against taking vitamin B or E supplements, omega-3 fatty acids or multivitamins solely to prevent dementia unless a deficiency has been diagnosed, citing insufficient evidence that the supplements provide benefits that outweigh potential harms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued updated global guidelines aimed at reducing the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, saying that up to 45 per cent of cases may be preventable or delayed by addressing modifiable risk factors throughout life.

Australians can ‘Ask 1800MEDICARE’ as new campaign promotes free 24/7 expert health advice.

The Australian Government has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of 1800MEDICARE, a free, 24/7 phone service, website and mobile app offering expert health advice from a registered nurse for non-emergencies.
The new national ‘Ask 1800MEDICARE’ campaign aims to promote awareness and understanding of the new service, ensuring Australians know how and when to use it.

You can now get free health information and advice anywhere in Australia, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422), visiting medicare.gov.au/1800 or by downloading the free 1800MEDICARE app.

When you call 1800MEDICARE about any health concern, you will speak to a registered nurse. The nurse will ask about your symptoms and guide you to the right care, whether that’s looking after yourself at home, getting help from a GP, Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, pharmacy or emergency department in your area.

1800MEDICARE is a first point of contact for health advice, especially for those who find it difficult to access urgent GP or other face-to-face services, whether due to location, after-hours needs, or other barriers.

Advertising will run nationally across television, social media, digital video, print, press, out-of-home and search channels, with tailored materials to ensure accessibility for First Nations peoples and multicultural audiences.

1800MEDICARE is available to everyone, anywhere in Australia, and no Medicare card is required.
