Fire After Life: the Red Beaks

Months after a Summer bushfire blackens the ground, something stirs beneath it.

The Red Beak Orchid (Pyrorchis nigricans) spends most years as just a single leaf flat on the soil, then a hot fire passes through, and the following spring the colony erupts in red and white flowers by the thousand.

Fire here isn't just an ending, for Western Australia's most secretive orchids, it's the cue they've been waiting for underground.
