Back in May we had Collie Police OIC Heath Souter address our meeting. Heath has been in Collie just on a year, enjoys the town and its people. Was good to hear of Heath's family, previous postings and the work being done by police in Collie. In particular his pride in his officers at the Collie Station and his forthcoming charity cycle fundraising ride for Police Legacy, an organisation to support the families of police killed or injured on duty and those who may need some help. To donate, go to the Police Station and see Leanne. If you want to hear from community leaders like Heath, look at joining our club. Send a message via this page.

Amanda Davis - Team Leader Family and Practical Support Services South West was our guest speaker for June and gave an overview of the Red Cross and its services in the South West. The Red Cross, and also known as Red Crescent in some other parts of the world is over 100 years old, having been formed from the work of Henri Dunant who witnessed huge numbers of casualties in Italy at the battle of Solferino in 1869.

Red Cross was instrumental in developing the rules of war and treatment of prisoners of war known as the Geneva Convention. It has a code neutrality, impartiality and unity to achieve it’s work worldwide.

Red Cross is known for its Blood Bank; Op Shop; Emergency Response; and Community programs, not all of which are run in all locations.

In the SW, Amanda is the Team Leader and point of contact for the many community programs coordinated by the Red Cross. There is a respite centre for carers who also have a support group. They also arrange emergency respite under the Commonwealth carers respite program. Also the housing and transfer program; Telecross program; Postnatal depression assistance to help new mothers cope with assistance to get to appointments and playgroups for up to 12 weeks. Involved in the visitors scheme and organising social visits.

Regarding assistance for the homeless and women's shelters. Amanda said these programs were available via Red Cross in Perth. Red Cross are funded mainly from the government, however, there have been massive changes from the Commonwealth towards consumer directed care, which means people have the choice of provider and control where their funding is spent. Red Cross is responding to these changes by fundraising requests and lobbying to corporations, philanthropists, street appeals, shops, etc.

Red Cross keep costs down by a network of volunteers, and by not employing any of its own workers, and using accredited private respite services.

Bill Cooper thanked Amanda for coming to Collie today and her interesting presentation. Amanda stayed for the remainder of the meeting and a cup of tea later. Also left a number of publications for members to read if they wished.

Another fun event held for members of the Collie Probus Club on 20th June was a Trash and Treasure / Amazing Race event. Designed and Organised by club member Leone it was a set of quizzes to identify cryptic clues about home products, and photos of landmarks around Collie, followed by an Amazing Race to several locations with tasks to be done before the clues to the next place. It was a truly fun event with prizes and refreshments at the end. Those involved swapped stories of their experiences. Today we had Ed Riley speak at our monthly meeting on the history and status of the Collie River, it's tributaries and usage. The future is not good for our waterways with salinity increases, invasive weeds, water extraction for other uses, and environmental degradation. Not good news, but hoping our higher levels of government have the foresight to remedy the situation. Congratulation to our new committee for their excellent start to the new Probus year.

09/04/2018

It's all happening at Collie Probus Club. We have a regular meeting tomorrow at 1pm RSL premises with Ed Riley speaking on the status of the Collie River. Then we have an organised dance demonstration and available tutors at the Italian Club at 1:30pm this Friday. A whole program of events has been planned for the next several months, so if you want to join in sent a message via this page. Visitors and new members welcome.
