We'd like to shine a spotlight on our wonderful CEO, Rebecca Adam ✨

Celebrating her birthday today, we asked her to reflect on the last year as well as the year ahead at Expression Australia 🎉

Video caption:
Looking back on the past 12 months, what has been one of your proudest moments at Expression Australia? One of my proudest moments has been seeing our teams come together to strengthen our services and expand our impact. Whether through new programs, stronger partnerships, or improved ways of working, it's been inspiring to see the difference we can make when we work toward a shared purpose.

What do you enjoy most about leading Expression Australia? The people. I have the privilege of working alongside passionate, talented, and committed individuals who genuinely care about creating a more inclusive community. Their dedication motivates me every day.

What is one thing you hope to continue building or achieving in the year ahead? I hope to continue building a strong, sustainable organisation that can expand its reach and impact, while remaining focused on the needs and aspirations of the Deaf community and the people we support.

Outside of work, what is one thing you enjoy doing to switch off and recharge? Spending quality time with family and friends is what helps me recharge. I also enjoy getting outdoors, whether it's a walk, a weekend away, or simply taking time to appreciate a slower pace.

✨ Deafblind Awareness Week 2026, 'Connected by Touch: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges' 🙏

Deafblind Awareness Week, running from June 22nd to June 28th, celebrates the deafblind community, highlights accessibility, and promotes diverse communication methods like tactile signing and Braille.

Celebrate this week with some amazing events 🤝

📍 Perth Event: Deafblind West Australians (DBWA) are hosting a morning tea celebration on Wednesday, June 24th, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am at Perth City Farm. The free event features a community art exhibition, a Q&A panel, a theatrical performance by deafblind actor Eddie Szczepanik, and the DBWA Young Leaders graduation.

💻 National Online Event: Vision Australia is hosting a free Online Sensory Story Time for children with sensory needs on June 25th at 11:00 am. It incorporates Auslan, music, and on-body actions for an inclusive shared storytelling experience.

📍 Victorian Celebrations: Deafblind Victoria (DBV) and Deafblind Australia (DBA) are hosting a series of events running through late June, including a Deafblind Art Exhibition, Parliament House Yarn Bombing, and a "Day on the Bay" at the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron.

June is Pride Month, where we celebrate, reflect, and stand with the LGBTQIA+ community including those who are also Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deafblind.

Expression Australia has been proudly supporting the Deaf LGBTQIA+ community for over 30 years. We see you. We celebrate you. We're committed to making sure communication access, inclusion, and opportunity aren't just words - they're something every person in our community can actually feel.

Everyone deserves to show up fully as themselves - Deaf, LGBTQIA+, and proud.

🛜 The essential infrastructure that keeps AEI online 24/7
👤 Specialised interpreter readiness for emergency-response situations
🚨 Critical communication access in moments of crisis

This is more than a donation. It is an investment in safety, dignity, and equality for Deaf and Hard of hearing Australians.

Auslan 101: Introduction is more than just a language class—it's an invitation to connect.

You’ll explore how to express yourself visually through handshapes, body movement, and facial expressions, while learning how to structure Auslan sentences and engage respectfully with Deaf people. This program is designed to provide a foundational introduction to Auslan, enabling participants to build confidence in basic communication through everyday interactions. This course is highly interactive, combining direct instruction, group practice, games, storytelling, and reflection. Every session encourages hands-on participation, ensuring that learners not only watch and copy signs but understand the meaning, grammar, and cultural context behind them.
