Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW. However, due to the ongoing fire risk, the BFDP will be extended in four Local Government Areas, including Gwydir, Mid-Western, Moree Plains and Narrabri.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

Goobang Street blaze

A fire occurred in Goobang Street, Condobolin in early January, threatening homes. Warren Ross (Warren Ross Bros Excavations) used a grader to help bring the blaze under control.

Suspicious fires in Condobolin

A man has been charged following a string of suspicious fires in the state’s Central West.
Central West Police District commenced an investigation into deliberately-lit fires in Condobolin on Saturday, 17 January 2026, and Sunday, 18 January 2026.

The NSW Police Force would like to remind the public that Lake Cargelligo is not currently in lockdown.

However, we encourage those in the area to avoid unnecessary travel.

If you need to go out, be mindful of your surroundings, exercise extreme caution and listen to the instructions of police.

As police continue a large-scale search in the area for the offender, who is possibly armed and dangerous, the public is warned not to approach him but call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
