"It was cool seeing Dad drive the truck, because nowadays I only ever see him at home on the computer." Eve laughs. "It was nice spending the weekend out there with Dad, doing our bit for the team.
Dad's spent 29 years at Australia Post, starting out as a night sorter, before becoming a postie, team leader, facility manager up until his current position... he's done just about every role up the chain. That photo is from around the time he was a Delivery Manager at Western DC. We used to visit him at work as kids, so I've always had a connection to this place.
I got my first job as a Christmas Casual, loved it, stayed on as a permanent casual in another facility, then eventually moved into Parcel Lockers and now work with our Out of Home assets. It's funny, every now and then someone will say, 'I met you when you were this big!' Even though [Dad and I] don't work directly together, it's nice knowing I've always got someone to bounce ideas off.
A highlight of working at Post with Dad was getting the opportunity to work together during Peak. I'd recently got my forklift licence and was stacking empty ULDs, while Dad was out on the truck distributing them to other facilities. It was great seeing us both play different roles in keeping the network moving during one of the busiest times of the year.
It was also really cool watching Dad in his element, doing something I don't know how to do. As his daughter, I felt proud to be on the forklift, stepping into a traditionally male-dominated role and doing my part alongside him.
From an early age, Dad instilled in me that if you want to do a good job, you've got to work hard. The job he's in today is a testament to how much work he puts in.
Anytime I need advice, or I'm struggling with something, there's someone I can turn to who's calm, fair and has probably encountered every outcome you can think of. They're all qualities I'd like to have if I ever become a team leader myself. He's a good role model."
