Gundagai in World War I 🎖️

This historic image, sourced from the National Library of Australia’s Gabriel Collection, captures a procession in Sheridan Street during World War I, around 1918. It is a powerful reminder of how deeply the war was felt right here in Gundagai.

As young men enlisted and prepared to leave, the town came together. Crowds filled the streets, the Town Band led marches, and the community gathered to farewell those heading off to serve.

Throughout the war years, Gundagai rallied behind its soldiers. Fundraising events, sewing circles and patriotic gatherings became part of daily life, while local men fought across Gallipoli, France and the Western Front.

By the war’s end, more than 300 men from the district had enlisted. Many never returned.

When peace was declared in November 1918, the streets of Gundagai once again filled with people — this time in relief and celebration after years of sacrifice.

As we approach ANZAC Day, this image reminds us that the story of World War I lives on in the streets of Gundagai and in the memories of our community.

Lest We Forget. 🌺

After the original hall was burnt down, the current Coolac Memorial Hall was quickly built as a replacement. While the main building was insured, the community embarked on fundraising to cover extras.
The biggest effort was a Coolac gymkhana held annually in a paddock at Mingay bridge owned by Carberrys.
Horse races, pony club events,a bar, afternoon tea,and hoopla are some of the things I recall
