In case of an emergency, can your fire brigade access the nearest fire hydrant to your property?

The HP ( Hydrant Path ) and HR ( Hydrant Road) signs around town tell us where to find hydrants.

Grass, Vegetation and Vehicles often obstruct access to hydrants.

The Fire Truck will be out and about in the coming weeks conducting hydrant inspections but you can help us by continuing to ensure any hydrants near your property are free of any obstructions.

There have been numerous incidents throughout the State where firefighters have been unable to access the nearest hydrant in an emergency due to it being poorly marked, obstructed by parked cars, mud or debris, or over-grown vegetation.

Poorly maintained or unusable hydrants result in critical time being lost while firefighters clear the hydrant or search for and access another hydrant further from the fire.

This is where you come in! We’d like to encourage members of our community to be a Hydrant Hero following 3 simple steps;
1. Find your closest water hydrant
2. Clear around the hydrant and ensure it is clearly marked and accessible.
3. If maintenance or marking is required, report it to us and we’ll take it from there!

👉 Having a home escape plan in conjunction with a working smoke alarm will greatly increase your chances of getting out safely. Every second counts. If there is a fire in your home, do not wait, EVERY SECOND COUNTS, GET OUT and STAY OUT and then call Triple Zero (000). Never go back inside a burning building.

👉 Never use external heating equipment inside your home. This includes those that use 'heat beads' or LPG as a fuel source. This type of equipment is not suitable for indoor use and can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide which could be fatal. All heating devices should be used in accordance with manufacturer's recommended practices.

👉 Ensure your flues and chimneys are clean and place a fire screen in front of open fires. Make sure your wood pile sits at least a metre away from the fireplace.

🔥 Don't let a cold snap lead to a mishap!🚒🔥

👉 Keep everything one metre from the heater and check it before you use it. If you suspect a fault, have the heater checked by a qualified repairer or replace it.

👉 Test your electric blanket before use. Lay it on top of your bed and feel the internal wires for any sharp or weird bumps and inspect the cords and controls for damage. Turn it on for five minutes and then feel for any uneven hot spots. If you notice any of the above, the electric blanket needs to be replaced.
