NSW SES Coraki Unit

NSW SES Coraki Unit The NSW SES (NSW State Emergency Service) Coraki Unit is the local combat agency for floods, storms and tsunami.

The NSW state Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, stor

m and tsunamis operations, the NSW SES also provide support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Vertical Rescue (VR), Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communications have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au

A bit of weather coming ☔️....remember "Trampoleenith-flyithawatith" which we know take flight without warning unless tied securely. Not to forget their close cousins "wheeliebinith-rollith and tumbleithawayith" also can cause havoc, damage and injury.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast the possibility of thunderstorms across Northern Rivers, Coffs and Clarence government areas starting tomorrow and continuing over the weekend.

Thunderstorm activity is forecast to bring localised heavy rainfall to some areas leading to flash flooding and residents are asked to be prepared. Please remember exact location of storms is hard to predict this far out.

Download the Hazards Near Me app or NSW SES website to stay across warnings as they are issued or updated.

NSW SES is getting ready to respond to any storm impacts and asks the community to:
⚡ Tie down loose items outside their homes
🏠 Clear their gutters and trim any overhanging branches
🚗 Move their car undercover or away from trees and powerlines
💧 If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route. Steer clear of floodwater.
☎️📞If you require assistance in floods or storms, call 132 500. In life threatening emergencies, call Triple Zero (000).

A great outcome!

Yesterday a 75 year old person failed to return home from a walk, prompting concerned neighbours to contact Police which instigated a coordinated search through the Nightcap National Park area today. 14 SES members from Lismore, Woodburn, Mullumbimby and Ballina units responded to the call along with local VRA Teams.
After spending the night disoriented and sheltering near the roadside, there was a huge sense of relief when the person was safely located by SES volunteers at around 11.20 am.
A big thank you to everyone involved for their dedication and teamwork, and to the community for the support shown.

School’s out for another year, and the six-week holiday period has officially begun ☀️

Whether you’re travelling locally, heading overseas, or spending time at home, please remember to take steps that help keep you and your loved ones safe.

⛅️ Always check the weather forecast so you know what to expect both at home and at your destination. Make sure your home is prepared for changing conditions.
Remember - it's Storm Season, and afternoon thunderstorms are likely to make a few appearances.
Secure loose items in your yard before a storm, and park vehicles away from trees and powerlines.

📲 Monitor the Hazards Near Me app or the NSW SES website for up-to-date weather warnings and information

🚗 Heading out on the roads? plan your trip using Live Traffic NSW and drive to conditions.

🥾 If you’re travelling into remote areas, hire a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) so emergency services can locate you quickly if needed.

🔥 In the summer months, there is an increased risk of fire danger. Follow the NSW Rural Fire Service for current fire information and advice.

Take care over the holiday period.

Thankyou to our amazing community who step up to be SES members.

In 2025, 4.9 million people in NSW stepped up to volunteer for a cause.

More than 11,000 of them were our members in orange, heading out into every storm and flood 🧡

Today, on International Volunteer Day, we celebrate those who selflessly give back to their communities. Whether it’s a shift at a Bunnings barbecue for the local kids’ sports club or preparing for a tropical cyclone, volunteers are an invaluable part of NSW - and the world.

To all volunteers everywhere: thank you. You inspire us every day.

Flooding is a part of life in the Northern Rivers, and the best way to act is to be prepared.

If you or someone you know is new to the area, this short clip gives an overview how flooding occurs in the Richmond River.

In Coraki, we can also have flash flooding and flooding from our local catchments.

Check out our new video below and see where all the water comes from.

Floods don’t affect everyone in the same way — the impacts can be very different depending on where you live. Floods are part of life in the Northern Rivers,...
