Did you know that Corinna runs on solar power. Rainwater collected on site. No plastic packaging. Sewage treated without chemicals. Waste removed off-site and recycled.

Have you walked the Whyte River Track in autumn?

It begins where the bridge crosses the Whyte River and moves into forest that gets progressively older the further you go. Myrtle beeches. King Billy pines. Celery-top pines. The track is 7.5 kilometres return and gains enough height to give you a different angle on the rainforest.

In May, the forest floor along this track is extraordinary. Fungi everywhere, most of them unnamed by the people walking past them. The Rocky River tributary runs nearby. That is where the 7.5-kilogram gold nugget came up in 1883.

Every cottage at Corinna has a private verandah, a rainwater tank, a gas heater, and a view into the forest or across the river 🌳

None of them have Wi-Fi. None of them have mobile reception. All of them have exactly the right amount of, well... nothing.

The Mezzanine Eco Retreat sleeps up to four across two levels and has a log fire. The Family Eco Retreat sleeps four to five with flexible bedding arrangements. The Roadman's Cottage, built around 1910, sleeps two.

The Huon Pine is a living relic of Gondwanaland. It grows no faster than one millimetre a year, lives for thousands of years, and Corinna is the northernmost point where it still grows wild.

There is a specimen on the Huon Pine Boardwalk that overhangs the Pieman River. It was growing before European contact. Before the gold rush. Before most things most people consider old.

The Boardwalk is 300 metres long, wheelchair accessible, and listed in the Top 60 Great Short Walks of Tasmania.

The Tannin Restaurant is named after the tannin-stained waters of the Pieman River.

The river runs the colour of dark tea, stained by the ancient buttongrass plains and rainforest upstream. It is one of those small, true details that connects a meal at Corinna to the place it is served in.

The kitchen uses Tasmanian salmon, Tasmanian scotch fillet, and seasonal produce sourced locally wherever possible. Dinner bookings are essential in peak season. Lunch runs noon until 2pm without bookings.

The Tarkine Hotel also has the Ahrberg Bar for pre-dinner drinks, a Tasmanian whisky list with tasting notes, and homemade muffins from VJ's Bakery in Somerset.

Laura came alone, went on the boat cruise, hired a kayak, had dinner at the restaurant every night, and said she will be back.

She also said it was lovely to live without reception and Wi-Fi for a few days. That is the thing most people mean when they say they need a holiday and do not quite know how to ask for it.

People ask how long to stay at Corinna, and well... the honest answer is: longer than you planned 😅

One night is enough to arrive, eat, sleep, and leave. Two nights is enough to start to hear the place. Three nights is when it begins.

The walks take a full day. The kayak to Lovers Falls takes another. Wildlife spotting asks for early mornings and patience... and somewhere in the middle of all of it, you stop thinking about what you left behind.
