On the 17th anniversary of the February 2009 bushfires, we remember the countless people across our communities who were affected, and those who continue to feel the impacts to this day.

We honour the 173 people who lost their lives, the 400+ people who were injured and the thousands of emergency service personnel who responded throughout the course of the fires.

Together, we remember 🎗️

Just a reminder that these water tanks are for emergency CFA vehicles only and must not be tampered with or have water taken from them.

Please consider how you would feel if your property was on fire and CFA crews were unable to access water quickly from a resource specifically designed for emergency use.

These tanks play a critical role in protecting lives and property — thank you for helping us keep them available when they’re needed most.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supported us at the fire in our area yesterday. All crews on the ground did a fantastic job to ensure the fire was brought under control as quickly and safely as possible.

A big thank you to our neighbouring brigades who attended: Heathcote Fire Brigade Mt Camel CFA, Mia Mia Fire Brigade - CFA, Axedale Fire Brigade Knowsley Fire Brigade, Redesdale CFA, Tooborac Fire Brigade, and Nagambie Fire Brigade CFA.

We also sincerely thank air support, who did an outstanding job containing the fire and assisting crews on the ground.

Shout out to the Strike Team for attending and doing an excellent job overnight — Woodend CFA, Clarkefield CFA, Gisborne Fire Brigade - CFA, Malmsbury Fire Brigade, Romsey Fire Brigade and Mount Macedon Group FCV & strike team leader Greg.

Special thanks to Jim Staggard from Heathcote Fire Brigade and James Baker from Axedale Fire Brigade for controlling the incident and ensuring all crews were well looked after, as well as Lorraine Leask from Heathcote for making sure crews were fed and hydrated.

Please be advised that crews will remain in the fire area over the coming days to monitor for hotspots. Once again, a big thank you to all involved.

🚨 TOTAL FIRE BAN / EXTREME HEAT DANGER 🚨

Greg here 🙋‍♂️
I'm the crew member who cuts straight to the point 😉

Today’s vibe: DON’T BE THAT PERSON

❌ No fires. Not small. Not quick. Not “under control.”
❌ No mowing, welding, grinding, chainsaws or spark-making jobs
❌ No dragging chains.. they start fires
❌ Keep vehicles off dry grass
✅ Have your fire plan ready! Know when you’re leaving
✅ Check stock, pets & neighbours
✅ Charge phones, battery packs & power banks
✅ Have torches, radios & spare batteries ready
✅ Know manual gates, pumps & water access if power drops
✅️ For those of us who reply on pumps, bottled water is an essential item to have in the home

🔥 See flames? Call 000 immediately.
🕒 Seconds matter. Excuses don’t.

🏕️ Packing up camp today? The job isn't finished until the fire is cold. Even if the flames are gone, hot coals can smoulder underground for days and reignite when the wind picks up.

Please remember: Burying a fire does NOT extinguish it. It just insulates the heat.

Follow these steps to ensure your campfire doesn't become a bushfire:

💦 Drown it: Pour water on the fire until the hissing stops.

🪵 Stir it: Use a shovel or stick to stir the ashes and break up the coals. This ensures the water reaches the heat at the bottom.

🪣 Drown it again: Apply more water to the stirred area.

✋ Check it: Hold the back of your hand near the ashes to feel for radiating heat.

If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave. Keep pouring and stirring until the ground is cold.

Safe to touch. Safe to leave.

🇦🇺 This is your Captain speaking..

G’day legends 👋

It might not be an official Total Fire Ban Day, but let’s not kid ourselves, it’s still hot and very dry out there and the bush doesn’t take days off.

🥩 So if you’re chuckin’ a lamb chop or a snag on the barbie, do us all a favour:

👉 Keep an eye on the flames because wishful thinking isn't what I'd call fire control
👉 Have water or a hose handy
👉 No stray embers, no hot ash dumped in the scrub
👉 And NO fireworks!! it’s way too dry out here

Enjoy the BBQ, the mates and the long weekend.. just don’t be a galah about it. One careless moment can turn a good day completely cactus real quick.

Big shout out to everyone in our area, so far this weekend you’ve been doing the right thing
Good choices, good habits and good on ya 👏

Crew update 😉
My Lieutenant Steve, who was knackered the other day, has since enjoyed a well earned quiet weekend and a cold beer 🍺
Let’s keep it that way and not give him a reason to swap the stubby for the turnout gear.

Stay safe and have a ripper Australia Day 🇦🇺🔥

Captain Trav 💛

Please be advised there’s currently a lot of smoke in our area, however we currently have no active fires in our area. This smoke is blowing across from other current active jobs such as the Otways.

Stay safe and keep updated via vic emergency app!
