Makuru is the Noongar season represented by dark blue, reflecting the cold, wet weather that characterises the winter period. It is the coldest and rainiest season, when people traditionally moved inland as strong westerly and southerly winds brought rain and occasional snow.

As rivers and waterways filled, travel across Country became easier, and food sources shifted from coastal and aquatic foods to land animals, particularly kangaroos. Kangaroos provided not only meat but also skins for warm cloaks (bookas).

Makuru is also a time of preparation for breeding among many animals. Ravens (wardongs) are often seen in pairs, while black swans (mali) gather on lakes and rivers to nest.

Seasonal signs include the appearance of blue and purple flowers such as the blueberry lily and purple flag. As Makuru ends, white flowers of the weeping peppermint begin to bloom, signalling the transition into the next season, Djilba.

The Town’s newest public artwork, Sandbar, has made its striking debut in South Cottesloe. Created by award-winning artist James Rodgers and previously showcased at Sculpture by the Sea in 2023, this captivating piece now has a permanent home on Marine Parade, just south of the Cove.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the coast, Sandbar brings a dynamic, contemporary element to the foreshore — encouraging visitors to pause and connect with the iconic seaside setting.

Mayor Melissa Harkins recently visited the installation, noting it is perfectly positioned for the community to enjoy.

Be sure to stop by next time you’re along the beachfront to experience Sandbar up close and discover Cottesloe’s growing public art collection.

National Reconciliation Week!

During National Reconciliation Week, the Town of Cottesloe, in partnership with the Town of Mosman Park, was proud to deliver a series of meaningful events that brought our community together through creativity, culture and connection.

Over the week, we hosted three engaging workshops:
🎨 Local school students took part in a children’s workshop led by Noongar artist Buffie Punch, where they explored storytelling and Aboriginal symbols through art.
🖌️ We then welcomed community members to a guided adult art workshop with Buffie, creating a warm and inclusive space to connect through yarning and creativity.
🧵 Our final event, a Reflect and Connect sewing workshop with Nyungar artist Deadly Denim, invited participants to upcycle denim while learning, sharing stories and reflecting on reconciliation through creativity.

We thank everyone who joined us and helped make these events so special.

The Town has completed the Reflect stage of its Reconciliation Action Plan and remains committed to continuing this important journey and promoting reconciliation within our community.

Did you know that showers make up a quarter of the average household water use?

As our climate continues to change, taking shorter showers can help us better look after our shared water supply.

Aim to get your shower time down to 4 minutes or less.
