Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School

Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School Set on a picturesque seven acres of farmland in the heart of Cowes, Phillip Island Outside, the students have access to a range of play and exploration areas.

Set on a picturesque seven acres of farmland, our state of the art building comprises eight flexible classroom spaces which open onto outside areas and break out spaces, an inviting library and discovery centre as well as staff and administration areas. These include a new oval, covered basketball court and adventure playgrounds. Sustainability and biodiversity are key foci of our school and this

is reflected in the inclusion of solar panels and water tanks in the design of our new buildings. Alongside our landscapers, students, families and staff have also contributed to the development of the grounds which include a native wildlife corridor, vegetable gardens, bush tucker gardens, an orchard, bird hide, wetlands and biodiversity areas.

At Our Lady Star of the Sea, we believe literacy learning should be evidence-based, purposeful and meaningful.

Across our school, our teachers use explicit, structured approaches to develop strong foundations in reading and writing, while also making sure students see a real purpose for what they are learning.

In Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2, we use Little Learners Love Literacy, an evidence-based program that provides students with systematic, explicit instruction in phonics, reading, spelling and writing. This week, our Junior students have been putting their literacy skills to a very special purpose, writing letters for their friends! Not only are they practising their reading and writing skills, but they are creating something meaningful that their friend can treasure as a keepsake. What a wonderful reason to write!

Our Middle School students have been exploring the world of poetry, developing their vocabulary, language, fluency and ability to communicate ideas creatively.

Our Senior School students have been developing their reading fluency, expression and comprehension through Reader's Theatre, bringing texts to life through performance and collaboration.

The results across our school continue to be excellent, with students making strong progress in their literacy learning.

Most importantly, we know that every learner is different. Our teachers meet students at their point of need, providing targeted support where students need additional scaffolding, while ensuring students who are ready to extend their learning are challenged.

At OLSS, we want every child to become a confident, capable and enthusiastic reader and writer, and we want them to understand that literacy isn't just something we do at school. It is a powerful way to communicate, connect, create and make meaning in the world around us. 🌟

What a special weekend for our OLSS community! 💛

Congratulations to Ethan, Mason, Talia and William, who celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Greg and Fr Siju.

It was wonderful to see our OLSS student choir join the beautiful St Mary's choir, making the celebration even more special.

A big thank you to our parish community for the delicious morning tea in the parish hall after Mass. It was a lovely way to celebrate together and a wonderful reminder of the strong community we share.

Congratulations again to our Confirmation candidates—we are so proud of you! 🙏✨

This Saturday, 8th of August, we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first saint.

Our school community will acknowledge this special occasion at our Whole School Mass on Friday, 7th of August, at 9:30 am at St Mary’s Church.

We warmly invite families and community members to join us as we recognise Saint Mary MacKillop and reflect on the courage and compassion she demonstrated throughout her life. We will celebrate her pioneering work in providing education for children experiencing poverty, her commitment to social justice, and her role in co-founding Australia’s first religious order, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

On Friday, we celebrated our Prep students reaching their **100th day of school**! 🎉💯

What an incredible milestone! We are so proud of how much each and every one of our Preps has grown over the past 100 days. From making new friends and building confidence to learning so many new skills, they have achieved so much.

A big thank you to our wonderful teachers, staff, and families for supporting our students every step of the way. Here's to many more exciting learning adventures ahead!

Well done, Preps – we are so proud of you! ❤️🌟

Throughout this term all of our students will be engaging in Media Arts Projects. Each grade will be using stop motion to create meaningful work that shares a message or story.
Our Foundation students have begun their animation journey with Brickmation creations. The 3/4s are inspired by the themes presented through the ABC kids series ‘Thalu’, such as teamwork, adventure and Culture. Our Seniors are using mixed media to create a work that represents our Fire Carriers Acknowledgement of Country.
We are very excited to see their final Media Artworks!

Maths is so much more than numbers on a page; it should be engaging, meaningful and fun! 🎲➕🧩

At Our Lady Star of the Sea, we teach mathematics using an evidence-based approach through explicit instruction, giving students clear, step-by-step teaching before they practise and apply their learning. We also know that children learn best by doing, so our classrooms are filled with hands-on materials that help bring mathematical concepts to life.

When students can see it, build it and explore it, they develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning! 💙✨
