HAPPY BIRTHDAY RIPLEY!🎉🎉🎉
It's hard to believe that little Ripley is celebrating his first birthday today!
Ripley is a little Eastern quoll who was born here as part of the Tasmanian Quoll Conservation Program. At only 2 months old, at 17g, furless and blind, Ripley was dropped out of his mother's pouch and sadly, she did not return to him. It fell to keeper Pru to hand raise him. She decided to name him Ripley, as he looked like a little alien and keeper Pru knew he was a fighter!
At such a tender age there was every chance he would not pull through. He was started on 3hrly feeds, including during the night, and he was so small he was fed via a syringe and had to be kept in an incubator until his fur had grown in.
At approximately 80 days old, when his eyes were due to open, we found that they were not developing as they normally would. A visit to the vet confirmed little Ripley has microphthalmia, a congenital condition where his eyes are incredibly small. He can still see, but not very well.
Despite the odds, Ripley (believe it or not) pulled through. He has grown into a very friendly, happy and confident young man. He LOVES playing with keepers and climbing all over them.
He is now a year old which officially makes him an adult. Ripley is still loving life and has become our most popular quoll entertaining guests on our tours through the day.
Ripley will require on going special care. If you would like to contribute to this, he is available to 'adopt' by visiting https://devilsatcradle.com/product/ripley/
