Little India’ To Be Established If Nick Reece Is Reelected Lord Mayor

To recognise and celebrate the massive contribution the Indian community has made to Melbourne’s cultural and economic life, Lord Mayor Nick Reece has announced he will work with Melbourne’s Indian community to establish a “Little India” precinct in the City if re-elected.

Melbourne’s connection with India has always been close and the relationship continues to flourish, whether on the cricket pitch at the Boxing Day test, through films and culture, in our world class universities or in our business community.

As a proud multicultural city, which embraces residents from all over the world, the City already has Chinatown (Little Bourke Street), the Greek Precinct (Lonsdale Street), Little Italy (Lygon Street), and KoreaTown. It’s long overdue that Melbourne adds an Indian precinct.

A re-elected Nick Reece will work closely with the Indian community to choose the site and make Little India a reality, ensuring that it becomes a must-visit part of Melbourne and appropriately celebrates the contribution Indian-Australians have made to our City.

Through a $10 million package, Little India would be a dedicated area recognising Indian life, featuring culturally significant street art, signage and regular cultural events. Annual funding of $250,000 will be provided to activate the precinct once established with cultural festivals and other events, bringing even more people to the area.

Alongside Little India, Lord Mayor Nick Reece has also pledged to strengthen Melbourne’s ties with India by making his first overseas mission as Lord Mayor to India.

This trip will focus on promoting Melbourne’s business opportunities, tourism, and educational institutions. Additionally, he plans to establish a sister city relationship with an Indian city, further solidifying Melbourne’s connection with India.

Once a sister city relationship is agreed, a live video link connecting Melbourne to its sister city in India will be established at the site of Little India. This interactive portal will allow residents and visitors of both cities to share experiences in real-time, fostering a deeper cultural exchange between Melbourne and India.

Daylight savings in Australia starts overnight tonight.

In spring, the ACT, SA, VIC, NSW and TAS turn their clocks forward one hour.

What does that mean?
Sunday, 6th October 2024, 2:00:00 am clocks are turned forward 1 hour to become Sunday, 6th October 2024, 3:00:00 am local time instead.

This Sunday 6 October (being the first Sunday in October) are when clocks are put forward one hour signaling the start of Daylight Saving Time. So set all of your clocks that don't auto update forward one hour before bed.

This is also the time for everyone to check/test their smoke alarms because working smoke alarms really do save lives.

So, remember to change your clocks FORWARD one hour and change/check your smoke alarm batteries.

Victorian Government elections will be held on Saturday 24 October. As the local government election approaches later this year, it's important you are informed and prepared.

Election date

Victorian council elections will be held on Saturday 26 October 2024. This is your opportunity to have a say on who represents Hume City.

In the lead up to elections, Councils must ensure they do not publish or distribute any information which could affect election voting. This time, from 12pm Tuesday 17 September – 6pm Saturday 26 October, is known as the caretaker period. We will only be communicating essential news during this time.

How to vote

The election will be by postal ballot, and ballot papers will be automatically sent to your address by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). Here’s what you need to do:

Keep an eye on your mailbox. Ballot packs will be delivered between Tuesday 8 October and Thursday 10 October.

Complete and post your ballot by 6pm on Friday 25 October.

Vote counting and results

Vote counting will begin on Saturday 26 October, and all election results will be declared by Friday 15 November. Stay tuned for the announcement of new council members.

Ensure you're enrolled

To participate in the election, you must be enrolled to vote. Please check your enrolment details at VEC check my enrolment and make sure your postal address is correct.

When you check your enrolment, you will be able to view the new electoral structures and ward boundaries for this year’s election.

Changes to Wards

In February 2024, the Victorian Local Government Minister announced changes to the electoral structure of Hume City Council. As part of this, Hume City Council will transition to having 11 wards, each represented by one Councillor.

The new wards are Aitken, Bababi Marning, Burt-kur-min, Emu Creek, Jacksons Hill, Merlynston Creek, Mount Ridley, Roxburgh Park, Tullamarine, Woodlands, and Yubup.
