The Whales are Coming! 🐳
Did you know that Crib Point Primary School adopted and sponsors a local dolphin named DD and a famous killer whale named Split Fin? This is through the fundraising efforts coordinated by the Dolphin Research Institute and our 2025 iSea, iCare Ambassadors.
Just last week, Split Fin has been positively identified cruising the waters around Phillip Island. This is super exciting news, as the last official sighting of Split Fin was off Wilson’s Prom back in 2024! As the matriarch of a family of killer whales, she’s known to travel as far north as Jervis Bay, and as far south as Robe in SA. First identified way back in 2003, Split Fin is easy to recognise due to her damaged dorsal fin (believed to be caused by a boat propeller), which gives Split Fin her name.
So, if you’re out whale watching on the Peninsula over the next month or two, keep an eye out for Split Fin!
