Residents of Bittern, Crib Point and Somers may have noticed smoke over the weekend. A planned burn is taking place:

📅 Friday, Saturday & Sunday
📍 Location: HMAS Cerberus (North-West Corner)

Planned burns are part of ongoing programs to reduce fuel loads and minimise fire risk. They also help improve the health of the landscape by reducing invasive species and encouraging the growth of a wider range of native vegetation.

🚒 Fire crews are on site monitoring conditions throughout the burn. This is not a CFA operation, however we have been responded a number of times due to community members sighting smoke or flames.

Please don’t be alarmed if you see or smell smoke in the area. Only call 000 if you see flames outside the map areas (outside the Cerberus boundaries)

Did you know that Crib Point is home to the Balnarring Pony Club, whose grounds are at the Woolleys Road Equestrian Reserve?

This weekend Balnarring Pony club will be running a huge 3 day event with over 150 riders attending. There will be more traffic in the local area, so please stay safe on the roads.

With such a big event happening in our own backyard. We thought it would be a great opportunity, to advertise our CFA animal related resources, for all the people out there with horses and pets.

The resources are available via the links or you can find them on the CFA Website.

Yesterday 3 of our members attended the Hastings Emergency Services Expo at Hastings Foreshore with the brigades Ultralite to participate in Community Engagement activities, with members from Hastings Fire Brigade and Langwarrin Fire Brigade (CFA).

It was perfect weather, with lots of people attending the event. Many families also stopped in to watch the Langwarrin Specialist Rescue Crew, do a car cutting and rescue demonstration.

If you look closely you may or may not see our 1st Lieutenant and Training Officer Josh photo bombing our Ultralite photo with his daughter!

🚒We held our Brigade Open Day on Sunday, which has traditionally been run on the first weekend of summer in the past.

🌦Despite the cooler weather, the event attracted strong community support, with many local residents attending, as well as locals from other parts of the Peninsula who came along and a family from the city also attended!

🔥Brigade members engaged with visitors on key topics, with lots of people asking about the recent Victorian bushfires, the easing of fire restrictions and property preparation for fire season over the cooler months.

🔥Our members also spoke about Fire safety heading into winter and highlighted the importance of maintaining working smoke alarms.

🙌The brigade expressed our gratitude and thanks to the following people and groups for supporting the day.

❤️Crib Point Primary School
❤️Crib Point Football Netball Club
❤️Crib Point Community House
❤️Brigade members Brit & Brad
❤️John Tomata CFA FEM program,
❤️Woolworths Hastings,
❤️Ben from Powertool Specialists Carlton
❤️Bendigo Bank Balnarring who attended and generously donated $3,000 to support essential equipment purchases and help cover BBQ food supplies.

❤️Special thanks was given to some of the residents of Dartnell Close, who, despite being personally affected by a fire impacting three properties in December. Came along and donated soft drinks, helped cook the BBQ with our brigade members and presented a further $1,000 donation to the brigade, raised from family and friends of one of the fire impacted families from Dartnell Close.

🚒A huge thankyou to our Crib Point brigade volunteer members, Somers Fire Brigade members Hastings Fire Brigade members and SES Hastings Unit members, who also attended and supported the Open Day, it was really appreciated.

Thank you to everyone in our community who also came along to visit on Sunday!

Last Thursday Crib Point & Bittern Fire brigades were paged to investigate and extinguish an unattended fire, burning in the bushland along the railway corridor.

This area could not be accessed by the brigades tanker, due to the railway line and terrain. Firefighters initially had to walk across the railway line and extinguish the fire with a portable extinguisher.

The brigades Ultralite vehicle was eventually able to access the area, by going all the way back around, along the West side of the rail corridor and into the bushland to apply water and overhaul.

Unattended fires in this type of dense bushland, are difficult to access and put the whole community at risk of a bushfire occuring.

Many Crib Point residents have experienced the trauma of a bushfire in our town. This type of behaviour causes alot of anxiety amongst some of the residents, who have personal lived experience of the last bushfire in Crib Point.

We are still in the Fire Danger Period and this means fire restrictions apply. Hastings Police attended and are investigating the incident.
