School holiday 3 day weekend Currawong cancellation.

The Western Pygmy Possum is one of the Woodlands smallest mammals weighing in at just 8 to 21 grams. It generally stays close to home wondering just 50 meters or so in search of food. They are also capable of entering torpor during cold or unfavourable conditions, allowing it to conserve its energy and food reserves.

At this time of year it is very important to be extremely mindful of the impact you are having on the feeding time of individuals. With the cooler days termite activity reduces, this leaves female numbats with only 5 or 6 hours of optimal feeding time to get the calories they need to sustain both themselves and their growing young.

So, if you see a numbat and it runs into a log and does no emerge in 5 or so minutes move on, this shows that it is not comfortable with your presence. On the other hand if it continues with its natural feeding behaviour observe it for a little while and then leave it to do what numbats do.

Most importantly remember that the animals welfare is more important than a few clicks on your camera!

The Red-tailed Phascogale is a small carnivorous marsupial which has benefited greatly from the ongoing feral cat and fox controls by DBCA in Dryandra. So if you're doing a night drive keep your eyes peeled for this beautiful little creature.

Some good news for our special Numbats :)

GOOD NEWS FOR NUMBATS!

Today the International Union for the Conservation of Nature reclassified the status of the Numbat from Endangered to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. While this is fantastic news, they did recognise in their statement that feral cats and foxes remain a major threat, and ongoing management is essential to the Numbat’s survival and recovery. This means the Numbat will remain conservation dependant into the future to ensure its survival, it’s status still remains as endangered in Australia at both a Federal and State level. It is a fantastic result and all involved should be very proud of their efforts that has moved the species away from the threat of extinction.

However, there is still a lot to do to help the struggling populations at Batalling State Forest and Dragon Rocks Nature Reserve. Perhaps now is the time to do all we can to ensure these reintroduced populations survive long into the future.
