As Joeys grow, mums begin encouraging independence, an important stage in every young Koala's development. This one settled for the next best thing: mum's freshly vacated spot, one of the best forks in the tree. Koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day, so location matters.

Come along to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and see the Koalas for yourself. They may look sleepy, but hang around long enough and chances are you'll catch some action.

Our School Holiday Programs run 22 Sep to 2 Oct, with hands-on adventures for every age group:

🦉 Junior Sanctuary Rangers (5 to 8 years), half day program. Meet native and exotic wildlife and spark their curiosity for conservation.

🌿 Sanctuary Rangers (8 to 12 years), full day program. Step into the shoes of a Wildlife Keeper with animal encounters, enrichment activities and habitat design.

🌳 Sanctuary Keepers Teens (13 to 16 years), full day program. A real insight into zookeeping with hands-on exposure to wildlife care.

Meet the rockstars of the rainforest! 🤍

Cotton-Top Tamarins are known for their distinctive white manes, but there’s much more to these inquisitive primates. They live in close social groups, communicating with one another, grooming to strengthen social bonds and helping care for the troop’s young.

Sadly, Cotton-Top Tamarins are Critically Endangered. This Cotton-Top Tamarin Day, share this post to help raise awareness for this incredible species 🌿

That nose isn't just for show! A Koala's sense of smell is their most important sense. Koalas sniff every single eucalyptus leaf before eating, checking toxin levels and water content to decide if it's safe and worth eating.

Their noses are working from day one too. A newborn Joey has no vision or hearing, so uses smell alone to find its way to mum's pouch.

Adult Koalas also recognise each other by scent, reading markings left on trees.

Plus! Every Koala's nose pigmentation pattern is unique, a bit like our fingerprints, which researchers can use to identify individual Koalas.

Did you know a young Echidna is called a Puggle?

We're hoping to see some Puggles around soon! Echidna breeding season is underway at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and the team has observed some very positive signs so far.

Short-beaked Echidnas are one of only three mammals on Earth that lay eggs, and until recently they were incredibly difficult to breed in specialist care. Our team has been working with The University of Queensland to unlock the secrets of Echidna reproductive biology, and every season teaches us more.

Kinda chic to have opened 79 years ago.

It all started when Dr Alex Griffiths opened a small Bird Sanctuary, mostly just to stop Lorikeets eating his flowers. Fast forward through a heritage listing, a miniature railway that's been running since 1964, and decades of conservation work, and here we are.

Some things age well.
