FIRE DANGER RATING UPGRADED TO EXTREME- FRIDAY 6TH FEBRUARY, 2026- SNOWY MONARO LGA
Please take note everyone, the Fire Danger Rating for the Snowy Monaro LGA has been upgraded to EXTREME in the last 30 minutes for today, Friday 6th February, 2026.
The Bureau of Meteorology has provided the following brief of the weather situation for our area today....
"Hot and dry conditions with moderate to fresh northwest to southwest winds will drive extreme fire dangers during Friday afternoon over parts of southeast NSW.
Winds are expected to shift milder northeast to south easterly during the evening. Isolated thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon and bring a dry lightning risk."
Let's all take care outside today to ensure we do not cause any fire ignitions.

SMOKE CLOUD FROM WALWA (MURRAY RIVER RD) VICTORIA FIRE- IMPACT ON SNOWY MONARO LGA
The photo below was taken at the Bombala Fire Control Centre at approx. 6pm tonight (Friday 9th January, 2026). The cloud in the photo is the smoke cloud from the Walwa (Murray River Rd) Victoria fire, which is approx. 150kms North West of this location.
It clearly indicates the enormous amount of smoke created by the fire, and how far smoke can travel.
Many other people across the Snowy Monaro LGA will have a similar view to this relative to their area.
Along with the EXTREME FIRE DANGER RATING tomorrow (Saturday 10th January, 2026), we are expecting a westerly wind change, followed in the late evening by a southerly wind change.
From what we know, and the history of past fire events, the Snowy Monaro LGA will likely be inundated with smoke from this fire.
What we expect:
- Smoke clouds will be visible.
- The smell of smoke will be present, likely to be varied in strength dependant upon your location in the LGA.
- Smoke clouds will dissipate into a general smoke haze, likely to be varied in intensity dependant upon your location in the LGA.
- Visibility distances may be down to less than 100 metres in some areas.
So that's the heads up, as we don't want people to be unnecessarily concerned as we experience it. This has happened before, and will happen again in the future.
