End of Bush Fire Danger Period – Lower Western Zone

The Bush Fire Danger Period for Wentworth & Balranald LGAs ends midnight the 31st of March. From 1st of April, fire permits are no longer required, but burn notifications are still mandatory.

You must notify the RFS and adjoining neighbours at least 24 hours before burning. Penalties apply for failing to notify or allowing fires to escape.

Heavy rainfall is continuing to cause water inundation across the region.

🚨 Silver City Highway (between Hollands Lake and Syphon Road): There is currently a significant amount of water over the road. All vehicles are advised to seek alternate routes at this time, pending an official state government road closure. Heavy vehicles are advised to detour via Mildura.

Please use extreme caution if you are travelling on any regional roads today, and remember: never drive through floodwater.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL and flash flooding 🌧️ - monitor conditions

Whats expected: A trough and cold front combines with a moist and unstable airmass in southwestern parts of the state to produce severe showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

The RFS is extending the suspension of fire permits in the Wentworth Shire Council & Balranald Shire Council LGAs until 00:01hrs Monday the 2nd of February. This is due to the predicted elevated fire danger over the weekend. During hot, dry and windy conditions, such as we are experiencing now, fires can start quickly and spread rapidly. Don't be the fire risk in your community.

Stay alert, stay prepared and report any unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

*Serious penalties, including fines and/or imprisonment, can and will apply for starting a fire without a permit during the Bush Fire Danger Period.*

The RFS is suspending fire permits in the Wentworth Shire Council & Balranald Shire Council LGAs from 00:01 Saturday 24th of January through to 00:01am Saturday the 31st of January. This is due to the predicted elevated temperatures and fire risk in the coming week. During hot, dry and windy conditions, such as we are experiencing now, fires can start quickly and spread rapidly. Don't be the fire risk in your community. If you have a current active fire permit and are burning the fire must be fully extinguished prior to the suspension.

Stay alert, stay prepared and report any unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

*Serious penalties, including fines and/or imprisonment, can and will apply for starting a fire without a permit during the Bush Fire Danger Period.*
