The National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre was established as a result of the response to the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005. The aim is to enhance surge capacity and provide clinical and academic leadership towards disaster and trauma care. 🎉 Congratulations to 24 participants who recently completed the 4-day Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS) Advanced course held at Guido Valadares National Hospital (HNGV) in Dili, .

Building on foundational principles, the course focused on high-level strategic decision-making during major incidents in the Timor-Leste context. Participants from health, police, ambulance, fire and military sectors engaged in workshops, tabletop exercises and mass casualty simulations, strengthening coordinated approaches to scene management, triage and patient retrieval, while enhancing both pre-hospital and hospital response capability.

The Timor-Leste Ministry of Health, Instituto Nacional de Saúde Pública de Timor-Leste INSP Timor-Leste and the NCCTRC Regional Engagement Program co-facilitated the course alongside senior faculty from Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Funded by the Australian Government, the course brought together experienced regional faculty to share established major incident management principles, support peer-to-peer learning and strengthen capability across the region. 🤝

Congratulations to the 14 participants who recently completed the Essentials of Critical Care course in Lae, Papua New Guinea. 👏

Delivered by the Regional Engagement Program and funded by the Australian Government, the course brought together participants from a range of clinical areas, including surgical, medical, paediatrics, emergency, outpatient, intensive care, obstetrics and gynaecology and nursing education.

➡️ The course focused on nursing assessment, basic life support skills, recognising patient deterioration and managing oxygen therapy.

🤝 Delivered alongside instructors from the Ministry of Health & Medical Services - Fiji and the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital, the course strengthened local teaching capability through co-facilitation and mentorship.

The NCCTRC Education team participated in the 2026 Australian College of Perioperative Nurses ACORN conference in .

Marking the 20th biennial international conference, the event brought together perioperative nurses, leaders, educators, researchers and industry partners from across Australia and around the world.

It showcased emerging research and innovation in perioperative practice, highlighting collaborative approaches to advancing patient safety and clinical excellence.

The team hosted a conference stall, engaging with delegates on NCCTRC programs, including pathways and capability development initiatives.

🌟 Strengthening disaster preparedness through practical planning 🌟

Participants in the Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Training developed sub-divisional disaster management plans to support local preparedness, coordination and health emergency response capability across Central Division.

➡️ The 4-day training focused on climate change adaptation, disaster risk management and health emergency planning, and was delivered in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Medical Services - Fiji (MHMS) and NCCTRC’s Public Health Operations in Emergencies for National Strengthening in the Indo-Pacific and Regional Engagement Program .

🗣️ Fiji MHMS Deputy Secretary Public Health, Dr Tevita Qoriniasi, opened the training and shared insights into Fiji's recent disaster experiences and preparedness priorities.

🤝 femLINKpacific and Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation also contributed to the training, reinforcing the importance of inclusive disaster risk reduction and planning that considers the needs of women, people with disability and other vulnerable communities who may face increased risk during emergencies.

Funded by the Australian Government, the training reflects a shared commitment to strengthening health emergency preparedness and disaster resilience across the Indo-Pacific.

The NCCTRC was on the ground at Barunga Festival over the weekend, where our team established a pop-up diphtheria vaccination clinic.

This deployment supports the ongoing public health efforts to strengthen community protection against the vaccine-preventable disease.

Congratulations to 10 health logisticians who recently completed the AUSMAT Health Logistics course in . 👏

The course brought together 6 members, alongside 2 New Zealand Medical Assistance Team (NZMAT) members and 2 Papua New Guinea Emergency Medical Team (PNG EMT) members.

🤝 and EMT’s participation highlights the importance of regional collaboration in strengthening health emergency response capabilities across the Asia-Pacific.

Facilitated by the Emergency Management and Logistics team, the Australian Government-funded course equipped participants with advanced skills and specialist operational knowledge required to support deployments, including the construction and operation of an AUSMAT EMT field hospital.

The was delighted to welcome delegates from the Foreign Defence Service Attachés and Advisers Group (SAAG) Partner Program.

The program brought together representatives from Brazil, Chile, France, Greece, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America to gain insight into the Northern Territory’s unique strategic and operational environment.
