Online reviews can be helpful, but not all reviews are created equal! ⭐🛍️

Reviews are a great way for Territorians to make informed choices, but you have the right to expect them to be honest, independent, and genuine.

Businesses should not:

• Ask friends or family to write reviews without disclosing their connection to the business
• Ask people who haven’t used their products or services (or a competitor’s) to leave a review

You can ask friends, family, or community pages for recommendations, but remember their opinions may not be fully independent.

🔍 Reviews are useful but never rely on them alone - always research thoroughly, especially for big purchases.

Keep an eye out for mould in your home this winter 👀

During the colder months in Central Australia, your home is more prone to getting mould, which can trigger respiratory issues. In the Top End it's an issue in the build up and wet season.

Ventilation is key! Remember to open your doors and windows each day.

Children’s winter pyjamas can be warm and cozy, but they can also be highly flammable 🔥

Avoid buying loose fitting nightwear that could catch alight and keep children away from open flames and heaters.

⚠️ Beware of unsolicited road marking and bitumen work offers

We've received a report of a trader approaching a local organisation in Darwin, claiming to have "leftover materials" and offering to carry out road marking work on the spot because their crew was allegedly leaving the Territory the next day.

The organisation became concerned after conducting some basic checks and declined the offer.

This approach shares some common warning signs associated with so-called "bitumen bandit" scams, including:

• Unsolicited door-to-door offers
• Claims of leftover materials from another job
• Pressure to make a quick decision
• Requests for cash payments
• Limited or difficult-to-verify business details

Before agreeing to any work:

✔️ Research the business
✔️ Check ABN and licensing details
✔️ Get written quotes
✔️ Compare multiple providers
✔️ Never feel pressured to decide on the spot

If someone approaches you with a similar offer, report it to NT Consumer Affairs on 1800 019 319 and help protect others in our community.

Renting in the NT and thinking about getting a pet? 🐾🏠

New pet laws apply to Northern Territory residential tenancy agreements signed after 1 January 2021. Under these laws, tenants may keep a pet at the rental property, as long as the pet is not restricted or prohibited and is reasonable for the type of premises - including its fixtures, fittings and appliances.

Before getting the pet, the tenant must notify the landlord before getting the pet. If the landlord does not respond within 14 days, approval is deemed to have been granted. The landlord may object, but must provide their reasons to the tenant in writing and apply to the Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NTCAT).

This is a big change from the past, when allowing a pet was entirely up to the landlord and the lease conditions.

There are important rules and responsibilities for both tenants and landlords when it comes to pets in rental properties, so it’s worth understanding your rights and obligations.
