As part of our Meet the Mayors and Presidents series, we are proud to spotlight City of Darwin Councillor and LGANT President, Peter Pangquee BM.

In recognition of National Reconciliation Week, Peter shares what reconciliation means to him, the importance of bringing people together through culture and stories, and the role we all play in building stronger communities.

From highlighting unique cultural experiences across Darwin and the Top End to reflecting on the need for better housing and essential services in remote communities, Peter’s insights are grounded in lived experience and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for all.

LGANT is proud to launch our second Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), reaffirming our commitment to reconciliation through meaningful action, stronger relationships, and creating opportunities across local government in the Northern Territory.

The RAP was developed by the LGANT RAP Working Group, made up of LGANT RAP Champion and Mayor of West Arnhem Regional Council James Woods, Mayor of the Tiwi Islands Regional Council Lynette De Santis, and LGANT President and City of Darwin Councillor Peter Pangquee.

This RAP reflects our ongoing commitment to working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and embedding reconciliation into the way we work as representatives of councils and communities across the Territory.

James Woods shared:

"As a long-standing LGANT Board member, and the LGANT RAP Champion, I'm proud to launch our second Reflect RAP.

This RAP represents the contribution we continue to make as representatives of councils and communities across the Northern Territory. With insight into regional, municipal and remote communities, our RAP Working Group intends to champion all corners of the Territory – sharing positive stories, increasing opportunities for Aboriginal people in the ways councils can, and delivering real change through partnerships and relationship-building.

We treat reconciliation as something ongoing that underlies all the work we do at LGANT, rather than an end goal. This RAP is a framework that demonstrates a small part of what we intend to deliver as an organisation."

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week, we reflect on our shared future and recommit to ongoing actions to build respectful and meaningful relationships across the community.

This year’s theme, ā€œAll Inā€, calls on all of us to take meaningful action towards reconciliation. At LGANT, we recognise the important role local government plays in building respectful relationships, supporting strong communities and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement across the Northern Territory.

We encourage our members, partners and communities to get involved and support the many activities taking place during National Reconciliation Week.
