When there's a larger fire in our area, we don't just tackle it on our own. Our surrounding brigades come and help too.
Which is why relationships, teamwork and familiarisation with each other's gear and trucks are so important.
On Sunday, we worked on each of these things, ahead of the impending summer period.
With members from Dereel, Rokewood, Barunah Plains North, Shelford, Teesdale and Mount Mercer, and guests from Gnarwarre, we refreshed ourselves on:
✅ How to isolate power to buildings
✅ Understanding breathing apparatus features, operation and how to support those wearing and working in it
✅ Driving, and going over the gear, of a number of different types of tankers in our area
✅ Radio use and how to talk clearly and efficiently on them
✅ Grassfire tactics
✅ Fireground management processes to help us get on top of fires as fast as possible
And the less obvious, but most important work, in building new relationships and re-establishing old ones. During summer we often end up working in new teams, on different firetrucks, in less-than-familiar areas, so these friendships and camaraderie are key to our success and wellbeing.
