The City and Environment Directorate (CED) brings together the people, services and systems that shape Canberra’s future. We were established to better align planning and transport, improve efficiency of development decisions, support environmental management, consolidate city services operations, and strengthen how government connects with the community. Our work spans the natural and built envir

• Deliver streamlined, customer-focused services.
• Coordinate planning, transport and environmental stewardship.
• Improve efficiency and impact across city services operations.
• Make government services more accessible, transparent and trusted. Whether it’s maintaining public spaces, designing transport networks, protecting the environment or helping residents access services, our work supports a connected, inclusive and resilient Canberra. HOUSE RULES:

🔋 Have old batteries stacking up at home? Don’t just bin them!

Even a single battery in your household waste or recycling can spark a fire when it’s crushed - putting people, waste collection trucks and facilities at risk.

The good news? There are easy and FREE ways to dispose of them safely 👇
✅ Drop off your used household batteries at one of 80+ B-cycle locations across Canberra.
✅ Take damaged batteries or items with built in batteries to the hazardous waste area at the Mitchell or Mugga Lane resource management centres.

Here are a few simple safety tips while you store batteries at home:
💡 Tape the ends to prevent sparks
💡 Keep them in a cool, dry place away from heat
💡 Keep them out of reach of kids.

Small actions make a big difference in keeping our community safe. 💚

➡️ Find your nearest drop-off point and learn more at https://www.cityservices.act.gov.au/recycling-and-waste/types-of-waste/batteries

Nature’s smallest workers are making a big difference at Yarralumla Nursery. 🌱

Using beneficial insects, the Nursery is helping protect thousands of plants naturally– reducing the need for chemical treatments and supporting a healthier growing environment. 🌼

🐞 Throughout spring, summer and autumn, ladybirds are released across the nursery to control aphids and other soft-bodied pests. Both adult ladybirds and their larvae are highly effective predators, helping keep pest populations under control while continuing their lifecycle naturally within the nursery.

🐝 During the cooler months, specially selected predatory wasps are introduced into the glasshouses. These tiny wasps target aphids by laying eggs inside them, creating a natural pest management process that helps protect nursery plants year-round.

The nursery has planted a dedicated beneficial insect garden bed along the main entrance drive for these little heroes to call home. 🦸 Filled with flowering plants that provide food, shelter and habitat for helpful insects, the garden also helps attract pests away from nursery stock while creating a vibrant and welcoming entrance. 💚

Did you know that leaves make an excellent mulch for your garden? 🍂

When stored, leaves will break down into valuable organic matter that enriches soil and promotes plant growth. They’re great in compost, too. 🌱

You can store your leaves (including those from your nature strip) in bags or make your very own leaf tower with just some wooden stakes and chicken wire.

How are you collecting and using your leaves? 🍃 Send us your photo inspiration in the comments below. 👇

➡️ Find out more ways you can use your leaves at https://www.act.gov.au/environment/water/waterway-friendly-gardening
