We're back at it in Mordialloc knocking on doors about the Housing Crisis and getting people informed of what the latest is happening in Parliament with The Australian Greens, and what Max Chandler-Mather, is doing!

Labor has caved to the Greens and agreed to $2 billion of direct funding for social housing, but the fight continues. We need to win a freeze and cap on rent increases! We look forward to continuing to talk to people in our local neighbourhoods, where we are hearing rents increasing, mortgage rates going way over people's means and fighting to ensure the government does more to house more people 🏠

The Kingston Greens have been out and about during the National Week of Action on the Housing Crisis!

Right now Labor is looking to gamble a pot of money into the stock markets so any return goes to social housing, even though last year that same fund would had a loss. We have been going out door to door finding out where people are at, and we know people aren't buying that "plan" and are sick of it - we need to put money directly into Public Housing, start getting money directly into getting people homes and implement a Rent Freeze.

The stories we're getting at the doors and in their homes has been heart-wrenching. We're hearing stories that people are being given rent hikes from $450 to $600 per week, and mortgage rates going way beyond where people can possibly afford. We're hearing stories of neighbourhood houses being inundated with requests for food and assistance, and the homelessness crisis increasing as people pitch up tents in vacant lots.

We need direct action now. We're committed to do what we can to build pressure on the Labor Government to come to the table with a plan to tackle the housing crisis. You can join in too: https://greens.org.au/housing/volunteer

Yesterday we were cleaning up the most impressive Braeside Park! Thank you to the Friends of Braeside Park for organising and keeping our side of Kingston clean

We saw plenty of trash blow in from Lower Dandenong Road which ends up on the nature strip that ends up getting mowed and reducing bits of trash into smaller, dangerous litter that pollutes the previous habitat in Braeside Park. It really makes you consider putting that litter into a bin before it gets there

Thank you everyone who joined in the effort to Clean Up Australia yesterday ❤

The other day our Mordialloc candidate Daniel Lessa - Greens for Mordialloc and our South East metro candidate Alex Breskin teamed up to hand out flyers at Mordialloc station that explain what the Greens can do for the community including:

🏠 Ending the public housing waiting list by building big and getting 200,000 accessible, sustainable public and affordable homes for Victorians

🏖 Protecting our bay by making manufacturers, importers and distributors responsible for the end-of-life of their products and packaging

⚖️ Establishing an Independent Parliamentary Integrity Commissioner to curb dodgy politicians and public servants from abusing our trust

The other day Alex Breskin and Jessamine Moffett - Greens for Clarinda visited Kingswood Golf Course, a site where there is a proposed development for a huge amount of homes to be squeezed onto a piece of open land that is home to thousands of trees and a multitude of wildlife.

It’s disappointing to see how the community's objections to this development have been ignored leaving them feeling unheard. The Greens believe that when it comes to planning like this, communities should have opportunities for ongoing, substantive, and meaningful participation in the planning decisions.

Big, private developments like this need public confidence. The public have spoken, 8,000 objections were received and council rejected the plan, yet now we’re seeing another decision where State Government is undermining the local community.

Victoria is in a housing crisis and to tackle this crisis we need to end the special treatment for big property developers. A development like this will make private companies huge profits while many Victorians struggle to find an affordable home. Victoria needs a housing system that puts people before profit.

We need to find a solution that is best for the community, protect our trees and wildlife and stop letting big property developers take advantage of our communities.

Alex Breskin, Jessamine Moffett - Greens for Clarinda and Daniel Lessa - Greens for Mordialloc attended the mayoral election on behalf of Kingston branch to see it move from one mayor to another.

Local Council is important as the closest form of government to the people, and being there and mingling with the community is so important.

We wish the best from the new mayor, Hadi Saab, and will continue our advocacy to ensure the community have a platform and a voice, and to use the levers of council to get the best outcomes from residents when it comes to social justice, action on climate, integrity and community consultation so that residents have a say on how their city looks now and into the future.

Tonight our Clarinda candidate Jessamine Moffett - Greens for Clarinda, our Mordialloc candidate Daniel Lessa - Greens for Mordialloc and our upper house candidate for South East Metro Alex Breskin were able to join the Defenders of the South East Green Wedge Twentieth Annual General Meeting.

Alex was able give a speech on where the Greens stand on the Green Wedge issues in our area and boiled it down to 3 key values.

🌳One - We must protect the biodiversity on this land
🌳Two - The best use of the land is to supply our urban areas with food from agriculture close to where it’s grown
🌳Three - We must protect what cultural heritage that remains of this land, un-pilfered by governments past and present.

The Kingston Greens were happy to reunite and come together on Saturday at the Mordialloc Woolies to support our candidate for South East Metro Alex Breskin.

A vote for the Greens and Alex this state election is a vote for the fight against the climate crisis and the rising cost of living.

Australia has some of the most unique and beautiful fauna in the world and it’s our responsibility to protect it. Because of this the Victorian Greens have created a zero extinction plan. It’s sets out to:

🌿 Stop Labor’s destruction of nature by ending native forest logging, banning barbaric duck hunting and stopping our rivers being sucked dry

🐨 Put First Nations people at the centre of Caring for Country with stronger rights and programs to ensure self-determination and cultural practices are at the heart of caring for land, water and oceans.

🦉Create a new $1 billion per year Zero Extinction Fund to reverse environmental destruction, restore habitat and fund the recovery of Victoria’s 2000 native plant, animal, bird and fish species facing extinction

🐟 Fix our broken nature laws so they actually protect forests, rivers, grasslands and wildlife from destruction.

Public Transport is incredibly important here in Kingston. We need more services and we need to make sure people can get to their destination safely without needing to rely on a car.

The Kingston Greens believe that a project like the Suburban Rail Loop originally proposed by the Victorian Labor Government is a good idea in principle, however, the plan still requires significant improvement and isn't fit for purpose, especially to reduce impacts on local communities such as Heatherton and Cheltenham. We have serious concerns about how it reduces open space across the board and regarding accessibility, particularly on the interchange with the Frankston line.

We also do not believe that the Suburban Rail Loop is the silver bullet to improve public transportation in the area, and it should be looked at as part of a bigger strategic plan, which should include initiatives that have a lower cost and smaller time to implement. The Greens plan is to:
- 🚅 Improve services significantly by making trains run every 5-10 minutes from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week across the majority of the network
- 🌇 Get early morning and late-night services running every 10 minutes all week
- 🚆 Fast track tunnels and track to increase services across Melbourne
- 🚌 Make a high frequency bus network, upgrading existing buses so that they can be solar powered

Transport is Victoria’s biggest growing source of carbon emissions. Polluting petrol vehicles produce around a quarter of our state’s emissions - the equivalent of one coal fired power station. We need a massive increase in train, tram and bus services to cut climate-damaging transport emissions...

Congratulations to our very own Alex Breskin, our branch convenor for taking the plunge for the South-East Metro! We're really excited to campaign and get real leadership into Parliament come November

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Big news everyone – I have been preselected by the Victorian Greens as the lead upper house candidate for South-Eastern Metropolitan for the upcoming state elections!

Some of my priorities for the next few months leading up to the November election will be:
💰 Tackling cost of living by getting us out of coal and gas and onto cheaper energy
🚌 Make it easier for people to use Public Transport with more frequent services
🎓 Invest in schools for genuinely free public education with quality teaching
🏠 Make housing affordable – end out-of-control rent rises and deal with the housing crisis
🏞 Real Action on the Climate Crisis by getting Victoria to 100% renewable energy by 2030

Ever since I first started campaigning in the region, I’ve been passionate about getting the best for our community. Whether it’s working with my city on its customer charter with other residents, campaigning to protect and expand our open space with more parks and protecting our Green Wedge, more buses and better public transport all around. After an amazing Federal campaign, more people than ever have voted [1] for The Greens, and I’m so excited to fly the flag for us here in the South-East!

I’m a local professional that like everyone else feels that crunch on the rise in our cost of living. We need a government that has the leadership to act on making housing affordable, and tackle the big issues that challenge the liveability of our community like replacing coal and gas with 100% renewable energy. We need to restore integrity in government, and it’s only through getting the Greens in parliament can we address the issues that matter to you.

I’ve grown up in the South-East and have lived here most my life. We have a truly diverse community who are trying to make the most out of life for them and their families. Let’s build on that by protecting our environment, ensure that our schools are properly funded, put in policy to make sure our kids can get a house for themselves and that we have a future worth fighting for. Will you help me?
