Public Transport is incredibly important here in Kingston. We need more services and we need to make sure people can get to their destination safely without needing to rely on a car.
The Kingston Greens believe that a project like the Suburban Rail Loop originally proposed by the Victorian Labor Government is a good idea in principle, however, the plan still requires significant improvement and isn't fit for purpose, especially to reduce impacts on local communities such as Heatherton and Cheltenham. We have serious concerns about how it reduces open space across the board and regarding accessibility, particularly on the interchange with the Frankston line.
We also do not believe that the Suburban Rail Loop is the silver bullet to improve public transportation in the area, and it should be looked at as part of a bigger strategic plan, which should include initiatives that have a lower cost and smaller time to implement. The Greens plan is to:
- 🚅 Improve services significantly by making trains run every 5-10 minutes from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week across the majority of the network
- 🌇 Get early morning and late-night services running every 10 minutes all week
- 🚆 Fast track tunnels and track to increase services across Melbourne
- 🚌 Make a high frequency bus network, upgrading existing buses so that they can be solar powered
Transport is Victoria’s biggest growing source of carbon emissions. Polluting petrol vehicles produce around a quarter of our state’s emissions - the equivalent of one coal fired power station. We need a massive increase in train, tram and bus services to cut climate-damaging transport emissions...
