We’ve been busy hearing from our members and gearing up to support culturally diverse Labor members at this year’s State Election.

This includes our recent Start of Year event where members met with State Secretary and Multicultural Labor member Steve Staikos about the campaign ahead. One of our exec members Alessandra Soliven is also running for Pakenham and we are proud to be supporting her including at her trivia fundraiser last night!

Victorian Multicultural Labor is a signatory to the below statement from multicultural members of the Australian Labor Party on the Bondi shooting attack.

"Multicultural Labor members are devastated to see this attack on Australia’s Jewish community. Australia is a multicultural nation and this extremist violence is a direct attack on what makes Australia the country that it is. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the wider community whose sense of safety and joy was shattered in a place meant for celebration and peace.

"We are disappointed to see some people weaponise this terrible act of violence for political ends. At moments like this, it is vital we ask the hard questions of what we must do as a society to prevent such a thing from happening again. What we need now is reflection and a sense of our collective responsibility, not blame, fear and division.

"We acknowledge the bravery of so many Australians who rushed to help others and save lives at their own peril. The heroic act of a Muslim Australian, Ahmed al Ahmed, in disarming one of the shooters and saving many lives, shows this was not about religion but about hate. We must work actively to reduce hatred in all its forms to create the kind of society we want for our children.

"We call on all Australians to stand together to resist hatred in all its forms. Courage, compassion and humanity know no religion, race or background. In times of tragedy, humanity must guide us forward."

Multicultural Labor was well represented by our members, from so many communities, at the Premier’s Multicultural Gala Dinner last night. Multicultural communities, like those who gathered at the dinner, are the true face of Australia now and into the future - not the racist extremists and neo-Nazis responsible for today’s brawls and disruption. Via the rising voices of multicultural communities, they will be defeated.

Victorian Multicultural Labor was working hard at the recent 2024 State Conference!

Victorian Labor adopted our Cultural Diversity Action Plan organising supporters in multicultural communities into being our members, our activists, and our future leaders.

Our motion for a Cultural Diversity Representation Working Group also passed. It will work with the Party's governing bodies to develop recommendations on improving culturally diverse representation in public office and party structures. It will report back to next year’s Conference.

And we met dozens of members at our Conference stall.

Exciting times ahead!

On Wednesday night, grassroots Labor activists from multicultural communities launched Victorian Multicultural Labor!

The federal and Victorian Multicultural Affairs Ministers Andrew Giles MP and Ingrid Stitt MP and Victorian Ministers Harriet Shing MP and Enver Erdogan MP joined us on the night at Victorian Trades Hall.

Speaking at the launch in front of hundreds of Labor activists as well as numerous Labor ministers, MPs, councillors and community leaders, the Ministers emphasised the contribution generations of migrants have made to Australia and enriching our communities.

The launch also featured performances by South Sudanese singer Ajak Kwai and Afghan musician Mustafa Muhammad Raza.

Our co-convenors Wallace Huang, Hafiz Jan and Melba Marginson, shared the group’s ambitious vision and their lived experience as culturally diverse rank-and-file Labor members.

Almost one in two Victorians are either born overseas or with at least one parent born overseas.

Our message is that representation matters and it is now crucial that our politics represents our cultural diversity.
