A great day out on the road with Central West producers!

We toured two local properties in the Trangie/Dandaloo/Nevertire area, exploring practical sheep and cattle confinement feeding systems in action.

With insights from our Drought Adoption team, attendees gained valuable tips on site selection, design, and managing animal health and nutrition in confinement, plus the many benefits these systems can offer during challenging seasons.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and shared the day!

For more info about preparing for and managing drought, head to www.droughthub.nsw.gov.au or contact a member of our team on 1300 795 299.

Significantly higher fertiliser and fuel costs have impacted crop gross margins and created uncertainty around cropping decisions for this year.

To assist growers, Local Land Services and Agripath have constructed a gross margin tool that allows growers to adjust the price of nitrogen fertiliser and diesel and see the impact upon gross margin per hectare for a range of crops in NSW.

The gross margin tool produced uses costs from the Agripath database such as fallow sprays, fertilizer, in crop herbicide /fungicide and harvest costs.

Growers select a fuel and nitrogen price, and the model will give a gross margin and the impact of up to approximately 10% variation in cost of these 2 inputs on that margin. Growers set their own yield target depending on soil moisture/consultant advice etc. The model allows choice between 8 crop types (barley, bread wheat, canola, chickpea, cotton, faba bean, lupin and sorghum).

Work done by agricultural economists so far indicate that higher nitrogen and fuel prices reduce gross margins for winter crops but still allow for viable margins.

Gain confidence in your business decision making when analysing gross margins. Find the tool at https://bit.ly/4dYfShn

🚚 Selling sheep or goats that weren’t born on your property? Here’s what to remember... 🐑🐐

When completing your NVD (National Vendor Declaration), make sure your tagging details are spot‑on 👇

If the animals have visual NLIS tags either:
• apply a pink post‑breeder tag/eID, or
• list the PICs from each ear tag on your NVD.

If the animals already have an eID device:
• simply list the number of head with eID devices on the NVD
• no need to apply another eID device
• no need to record their individual PICs. ✔️

And remember - only ONE eID device per animal.

How do you make the right decisions when the season turns against you and the pressure is on?

In this episode of Chris Kilby shares how he’s managing a dry and challenging season near Trundle, offering practical insights into decision-making, risk management, and keeping a farming business moving forward when conditions are tough.

Chris explains how they’ve adapted their cropping plans after missing key rainfall windows, shifted focus to feeding and protecting their core breeding ewes, and made early decisions to reduce stock numbers. He walks through the realities of confinement feeding, water security challenges, and the significant effort involved in establishing reliable infrastructure under pressure.

You’ll also hear about the mental side of farming through dry conditions, the importance of community and connection, and why continuous learning and surrounding yourself with the right people can make all the difference.
