Yesterday Dunmore Brigade was sent on a Patrol of the Menai Hazard Reduction that's been undertaken the last few days.

We got to spend the day continuing the mopping up process, and Dunmore 7 equipped with a Tree Felling Fireline member also got to spend a good portion of the day making safe smokers and unsafe trees in consultation with the Incident Controller.

Around 3pm when the wind picked up, all the dangerous trees and smokers were mopped up and made safe, ensuring on the extreme fire danger day nothing got out and caused any issues.

International Friendship at it's finest!

Over the last few weeks, one of our Firefighters Paulo went on a holiday back to his old hometown of Penfiel, Portugal!

While over there, Paulo did something special, revisiting his old fire station which he volunteered with since he was just 14 years old! For 22 years he fought with the Bombeiros Voluntários Penafiel before moving to Australia in the last few years, and joining us here in the NSWRFS at Dunmore Brigade where he serves as an active members, recently qualifying as a Rural Fire Driver among other courses!

While over there he got to reconnect with some fellow colleagues, catch-up with family and friends and also give a very unique present - An RFS T-shirt as a souvenir which now sits in their station's museum!

Paulo goes overseas regularly to meet up with family, friends and his old station all the time, a tribute to the type of friendships made in firefighting, career or volunteer, they truly can last a lifetime!

In return, they gave him a backpack which has already got some ash on it while working yesterday's Hazard Reduction patrol.

Thanks Paulo for spreading the friendship! And we look forward to seeing what other things you give and receive for years to come!

Today Dunmore 7 was tasked to support a Hazard Reduction in the Menai area.

Dunmore 7 was tasked with lighting and then mopping up the Beamuris Sector alongside other local brigades.

Other crews remain on scene overnight finalizing the mopping up and remaining burns, and Dunmore 7 will return to patrol the area with the upcoming Extreme Fire Danger expected in the Sutherland region ensuring no reignitions take off and cause issues tomorrow morning (05/09/2026).

Once again, Hazard Reductions like this are planned out extremely thoroughly, taking into consideration topography, fuel loads, weather, local demographics and logistical supports. Yesterday (03/09/26) Dunmore Rural Fire Brigade alongside Jamberoo Rural Fire Service, Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade, Albion Park Rural Fire Brigade and Illawarra Sutherland Operational Support Brigade responded to a Grass Fire in Clover Hill Road in Jamberoo.

Dunmore 1 was tasked on arrival with supplying water up the hill to other tankers with it's driver, while the remaining crew were sent to the frontlines to assist with knocking down the fire and mopping up afterwards.

As we come into our Fire Danger Period (Fire Season) in the coming months we hope situations like this serve as an important reminder to prepare your fire plan's and discuss with your family and friends what you will do if a fire impacted your house or property.

We also understand that during this incident, a small incident occured leading to the water main suffering damage. While incidents like these are rare, they do happen and usually aren't the firefighters fault. Older water mains, unused hydrants and overall infrastructures in regional areas can make these incidents more prone and we'd like to apologise for any inconveniences caused during this time and give thanks to Sydney Water for their quick response and the Jamberoo community for their patience! - It's deeply appreciated!

Last Saturday Dunmore and Albion Park Rural Fire Brigade assisted residents of Dunmore Lakes with multiple large and small pile burns.

The property owners onsite requested us to help monitor and extinguish the piles throughout the day making it an awesome opportunity for our newer members to get some training and practice in different ways to manage and setup fires, including drafting using a portable pump, a skill we don't use very often in urban-based firefighting.

A big thanks to the land owners for making the safe choice, following the paper trails and getting it done safely - and a big thanks to all members of both brigades who pitched in to make the day run smoothly!

On Wednesday, Dunmore Brigade with Albion Park Rural Fire Brigade headed to Dunmore Tip to check out their complex and intricate Methane system used to help keep the tip in good-standing with the community.

The system works by extracting Carbon and off-gasses such as methane from the decomposition of waste and then either burning it off when a limit is reached, or storing it and using it to put power back into the grid.

While we don't plan on playing with Carbon or Methane, the visit gave us important knowledge on how to disable the system, where and when it may affect how we fight rubbish fires and gave us a chance to upgrade our Incident Plans to help ourselves and other brigades out if something major ever erupted.

A big thanks to everyone for arranging and coming out to get a good look at the system, let's hope we never have to use our new knowledge!

At last night’s Dunmore General meeting, Brigade Captain Greg Hardy presented Daryl Kimmins with the Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation (Unit).
This award recognises the outstanding efforts of the unit during the 2025 flood operations in North Queensland. With all roads cut off, Daryl and eight other RFS members travelled to Lucinda by boat to assist the community during the emergency. Their commitment, resilience, and willingness to step up in challenging conditions exemplify the spirit of the Rural Fire Service.
Congratulations to Daryl and the team on this well-deserved recognition.

The last 2 weeks at the brigade have been a bit slow lately, so what do we do when we're not out and about fighting fires and looking cool in shiny red trucks?

We train!

Last weekend 2 of our members from Dunmore Brigade got to complete their Village Firefighter course in the Dapto training area!

A third member Daryl was apart of the training and assessement team for the course, a big thank you to all of them who took the time and patience to teach such handy skills!

Reagan and Ani spent 4 days over the month building their skills and capabilities in responding to village incidents such as structure fires, car fires and MVA's.

This course strengthens their operational readiness and helps ensure our brigade can continue to provide a capable response to our local community when we're called upon.

Congratulations to you both!

We've also spent the last few weeks cleaning trucks, maintaining equipment and doing our normal monday night training where we got a refresher on hydraulics and pumping.

A big thanks to those members who turned up to both maintenance and training night.

In this video below, you can see some of the course students carrying out a fog attack on a alight gas cylinder, with the jet stream to cool the cylinders and the fog to protect the firefighters, they move up and turn off the cylinder - putting the fire out.

*Please note, all live fire training was done with the supervision of instructors with correct PPE etc. Please do not try these sorts of things at home*

Tonight the legends of Dunmore NSW RFS aren’t fighting fires… they’re gathering for something just as important, our Annual General Meeting. 🚒🔥

Did you know volunteer firefighting brigades in NSW date back over a century, with rural communities banding together long before modern equipment and technology existed?

Neighbours protected neighbours, often with little more than determination, teamwork and a commitment to keep their communities safe. While the trucks may look different today, that same spirit still drives brigades like Dunmore.
Behind every pager going off at 2am, every bushfire fought, every storm cleaned up, and every community event supported, there’s a team of everyday people stepping up when it matters most.

Tonight is a chance to reflect on the year that’s been, celebrate the people behind the uniforms, recognise the dedication and volunteer spirit that keeps our brigade strong, and look ahead to what’s next.

People often see the flashing lights and fire trucks 🚒 but tonight is about the heart of the brigade: the members, the mateship 🤝, and the commitment that keeps Dunmore ready to answer the call.

Here’s to another year of serving our community and continuing a tradition built on courage, community and stepping up when others need it most. 🚨👏
