QMRS Online Training – Now Available

Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) has expanded its online training options, giving mining operations greater flexibility to maintain workforce capability around roster and operational requirements.

RIIERR601E Establish and maintain mine emergency preparedness and response systems - Now available fully online.

RIIENV301E Conduct atmospheric monitoring - Existing unit holders can now complete an online refresher and reassessment pathway to update their knowledge and formally demonstrate current competency. (Successful completion results in a new Statement of Attainment for RIIENV301E.)

QMRS delivered a Statutory Official Emergency Response course at Boonal Station from 21 to 25 August.

Participants brought a strong willingness to learn, contribute and share their knowledge throughout the course.

Good luck to all teams competing tomorrow in the 2026 Queensland Mines Rescue State Cup at Carborough Downs.

Hosted by Argo Natural Resources, the State Cup will bring together Mines Rescue teams from across Queensland to put their skills, knowledge and teamwork to the test.

QMRS wishes all competitors the very best for the day. We also thank the officials, volunteers and supporters who help make the competition possible.

Congratulations to six Lake Vermont Mine recruits who have successfully completed their Surface Mine Emergency Response training with Queensland Mines Rescue Service.

This achievement represents the completion of all required QMRS training to our high standards, with each recruit demonstrating the knowledge and practical skills needed to assist fellow mine workers and respond effectively in an emergency.

Earning the QMRS Challenge Coin reflects this standard being met. It is awarded only when recruits have successfully completed their training and demonstrated readiness in mine emergency response capability. It recognises both achievement and the responsibility that comes with their ongoing role in supporting site safety.

Remembering Box Flat

Queensland Mines Rescue representative Ray Smith attended the annual Box Flat Memorial Service in Ipswich on Friday 31 July, marking 54 years since the Box Flat mine disaster.

On 31 July 1972, 17 men lost their lives, including eight members of the Booval Mines Rescue Brigade who entered the mine in an attempt to extinguish or seal the fire.

An eighteenth man died 19 months later as a result of injuries sustained in the disaster.

Families and community members gathered to remember those who were lost and reflect on a tragedy that remains an important part of Queensland’s mining and mines rescue history.

We remember those who lost their lives, their families, and the Mines Rescue Brigade members who responded that day.

Tonight, our community gathered at the Moranbah Miners’ Memorial to observe one minute’s silence for the worker who lost their life at Peak Downs Mine today.

Our thoughts are with their family, friends, workmates, first responders and everyone affected by this tragedy.
