Join us in celebrating Extended Care Paramedic, Ian and Volunteer Ambulance Officer, Elizabeth, two dedicated SAAS professionals honoured in today’s King’s Birthday Honours List with an Ambulance Service Medal.

Beginning his career as a paramedic, Ian has held multiple clinical and frontline roles in his 28 years of service. Ian has had a profound and enduring impact on the education, development, and clinical capability of SAAS, setting set the foundation for the standards of clinical practice SAAS provides to the community today. Ian also contributes hundreds of volunteer hours to support training, clinical development and post-case reflection.

Elizabeth volunteers with the Moonta Team in Green, providing front-line ambulance services to her local community. During the COVID 19 pandemic, Elizabeth continued to undertake her operational duties to ensure continuity of ambulance response was maintained, demonstrating a deep personal level of care and commitment. Elizabeth also mentors new volunteers, embodying what it is to be a SAAS volunteer every day.

Well done Ian and Elizabeth for your outstanding contributions to your community.👏👏

Meet Amy, Kelly and Calvin, some of our Volunteers from Kangaroo Island and Goolwa who also work as Registered Nurses.

Each of them has been able to bring their healthcare skills into their volunteer role, using their experience to give back to their communities.

“I joined because I wanted to become a paramedic, using nursing as a pathway,” Kelly said.

“Now it complements my nursing career. It’s helped me understand how the health system works, and I do it now to help people.”

For Calvin, joining SAAS in 2021 started out as curiosity as he wanted to understand what volunteering would be like.

“I’m glad I joined as a volunteer as it has left me feeling more satisfied and being a nurse has helped me fast-track my volunteering induction,” he said.

If you are a Registered Nurse looking to volunteer, SAAS can fast-track your induction, with your existing skills and knowledge recognised.

To join your local volunteer team in country SA, head to saambulance.sa.gov.au/volunteer-with-us/ or call 1300 175 584.

When you volunteer with SAAS, you expect to learn lifesaving skills such as CPR, patient care, and how to use our radios.

But there’s more to it than that because emergencies don’t always happen in convenient places.

Sometimes they’re on remote farms or beaches. Where getting there safely is just as critical as what you do when you arrive.

That’s why our volunteers train for all conditions — including 4WD driving on sand hills.

Learning how to handle ambulances in difficult terrain means we can reach people wherever they need us.

It’s challenging. It’s hands-on. It can be dirty. But it’s all part of being ready.

Thanks to Ned and the Robe team for these amazing training photos!

Recognise these feet? It’s our Kingscote volunteers who are proudly putting their bright, bold socks forward for Day!

It’s a bright and timely reminder that our patients and staff are people with thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

SAAS is joining this great campaign to raise awareness of mental health, and to encourage everyone to reach out when they need.

Keeping high school students safe from themselves takes a community.

Pictured here are Kat, Lauren, Andrew, Molly and Matt, who were in Berri talking to students about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, speeding and other risk-taking behaviours.

Speaking from real-life experiences, the presenters help young adults make better choices, reduce pressure on emergency services, and keeps our communities safer.

Thanks to all who spend their time contributing to the incredible PARTY Program SA.

Every station has that one person that binds everyone and everything together — the ‘glue’ behind the scenes.

At Lucindale, that’s Carol. For the past 25 years, she has been a steadfast source of strength, support, and compassion for her teammates, while consistently exhibiting excellence as an Ambulance Officer.

Whether on the road in an ambulance, working on base, supporting teammates or keeping rosters running, her kindness, reliability, and dedication never go unnoticed.

Known as the ’roster queen’, Carol goes above and beyond to make sure the station and community are always covered — even stepping up herself when needed.

A true leader, teammate, and all-round legend. Thank you, Carol, for your 25 years of service to SAAS and the Lucindale community.

From a chance first aid course in 1976 to five decades of service with SAAS, Clive’s volunteer ambulance journey is a testament to quiet dedication and community spirit.

Starting in Mallala with nothing more than a willingness to “give it a go,” Clive went on to serve towns across South Australia—leading teams, training volunteers, and helping ensure 24/7 care for his community.

Along the way, Clive has witnessed both heartbreak and gratitude, forming lifelong friendships and making a lasting impact. Throughout his journey with SAAS, Clive credits much of his success to his wife Rosslyn, and we take this opportunity to thank Rosslyn as well.

Fifty years to the day Clive signed up with St Johns, it’s the simple moments that matter most—like the day a grateful family tracked him down just to say thanks.

Clive’s message to anyone thinking about joining? Give it a go.

The rewards will change your life — and someone else’s.

Two of our paramedics recently visited Monarto with TLC for Kids, an initiative that provides fun and memorable days for kids battling illness.

Emma and Brandon spent their free time providing care and support in the blue ambulance, affectionately known as Noah.

Thanks to TLC for Kids, as well as Emma and Brandon, for the service and an outstanding and productive partnership, one year on.

For Hamley Bridge volunteer Ambulance Officer, Amy, driving an ambulance for the first time was unforgettable.

“It was a mix of excitement, pride, and a bit of nervousness. It felt like a real milestone — to me it symbolised trust and responsibility.”

From helping others and developing her clinical and inter-personal skills, Amy says the biggest revelation was how much her self-confidence and independence has grown.

“I honestly didn’t expect to gain as much as I have. I was amazed by how supportive and welcoming the green team environment is — it really feels like being part of something bigger than yourself.”

To volunteer with SAAS, all you need is the willingness to learn. With flexible study and shift possibilities, any adult that is fit and healthy can make a difference.
