Eden Valley Institute Inc.

Eden Valley Institute Inc. The Institute building is central to our township; it is community owned and self- funded.

But it is also a hub for those occasions when the community, or any part of the community, wants to assemble, congregate, exercise, empathise or just party.

A. What connection do roller skates have with one of Eden valley's iconic buildings?
Well it’s the EV Institute of course (as one of you correctly guessed).

It turns out that before the hall flooring was installed it had to be verified as “adequate for roller skating”.

A2. Bonus question: when was the roller skating craze at its peak?
This one is harder to answer as roller skating has been popular at various times through the past 150+ years, but I’m confident you wouldn’t have answered 1910.

Yes, way back then every Wednesday and Saturday evening large crowds indulged in skating at the Institute. Thankfully the floor was pronounced as a first-class for skating.

According to The Advertiser, of 26 October 1910, a successful skating carnival was held in the Institute on 22 October. Over 200 people paid for admission (200!! How on earth did they fit them all AND have room for skating too). For those interested, the takings amounted to over £15.

Miss Sylvia Bradley and Master Charles Bradley gave a clever exhibition of trick and fancy skating.

Additionally 17 sets of secondhand skates were purchased from Elite Skating Rink at 10/9 each. The inspiration for this was that skating and competitions had been immensely popular and successful in raising funds for renovations at Springton & Mt Pleasant. Looking for fundraising ideas? Over to you Eden Valley Institute.

For many years, an end of season Skating Carnival was an annual event on the Institute's calendar.

However, things were not all milk & honey in the Valley of Eden.

A Miss Jenner tabled a letter to the EV Institute committee on 29 July 1914 protesting the behaviour of certain skaters in the Institute Hall on Saturday evenings.

One Mr. Pinson was called to hear the charges and warn him against repeating the alleged offences (which he denied).

The secretary then wrote to Miss Jenner expressing the committee's determination to take drastic measures to prevent a repetition of the offences complained of.

Hmmm, one wonders (though perhaps can presume) what poor Mr P was accused of.

All this was found in the "This Valley of Eden" produced by the EV Historical Society & is available at multiple locations around the place including Lillefield Gallery, Barossa Visitors Centre in Tanunda, Barossa Library, Mt Pleasant Library.

In just five days the Eden Valley Institute's Annual Wine Auction will almost be starting. (Sunday 27 October. 1pm. Eden Valley Institute.)

Held every year on the last Sunday of October, this quality wine auction is fast becoming a highlight on the wine buyer's calendar.

Using donations gathered from a wide range of extremely generous wineries across the Eden & Barossa Valleys, the EV Institute Annual Wine Auction always manages to assemble an eclectic mix of good drinking wine, plenty of high-end top-quality exemplars of the winemaker's art, along with some special hard-to-come by treats -- limited edition magnums, interesting flights, museum releases, & so on.

The bidding is an event in itself. Watch as neighbour battles neighbour to secure the prized lot. Or a fellow winemaker, knowing how good a colleague's vintage is, bidding to add it to their personal cellars. It's an event in & of itself. Sometimes bargains sneak by at ridiculously low prices. And other times, top dollar is paid for elusive, rarely seen, & highly sought after wines.

All in all, it's a highly entertaining day, whether you go home with a carton or two of wine, or not. Tickets available at the door for $10 which includes a drink or two, some cheese, some crackers, and a plate of nibbles at intermission.

This year's highlights include, but are not limited to:

HUTTON VALE Cabernet Sauvignon FLIGHT of 2012, 2013, 2014 (no 15) 2016, 2017, 2018

2 vertical flights from GATT Wines (A Riesling flight & a Cabernet Sauvignon both covering the years 2014-2019)

JOHN DUVAL WINES
A limited edition three pack of 2016 Integro housed in a wooden presenter box 2016.
Integro — a classic blend of EV Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stonegarden Vineyard, combined with exceptional BV Shiraz.

& lots of Magnums including these from:

LANGMEIL Winery (2020 "Pure Eden" Shiraz)

SONS OF EDEN (2021 Freya Riesling)

SCHWARZ (2021 ‘Nitschke Block’ Shiraz)

Several vintages from POONWATTA (including 2018 "The 1880" Shiraz, only 40 Magnums ever made)

& as always, there’s a BROCKENCHACK Methuselah Shiraz

Have a flick through our catalogue, see what takes your fancy …

… & we’ll see you on Sunday
