Burning Off? You Still Need to Notify

Although we are now outside of the Bush Fire Danger Period, if you’re planning to conduct a pile burn or burn off, you are still required to notify the NSW RFS at least 24 hours before lighting up.

Before you burn:

• Submit a Notification of Burn with the NSW RFS at least 24 hours prior.
• Inform all neighbouring properties that may be affected by smoke.
• Consider posting in local community social media groups to help keep residents informed.
• Check the weather conditions and ensure you have adequate water and equipment available.
• Never leave a fire unattended.

Taking a few minutes to notify others can prevent unnecessary calls to emergency services and helps keep our community informed and safe.

To notify your burn, visit https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp?id=guardian_cat_item&sys_id=9e19819bc361f1d04a9cdc31150131ad

Remember, even outside of fire season, conditions can still be dry and fires can spread unexpectedly. If in doubt, don’t light it up. Stay safe and burn responsibly.

Lithium battery fires are on the rise, and unfortunately we are seeing more and more fires caused by batteries being thrown into household rubbish.

Items many people don’t even think about contain rechargeable batteries, including:
• Vapes
• Electric toothbrushes
• Old mobile phones
• Power tools
• Rechargeable vacuum cleaners
• Key fobs
• Cameras
• Wireless headphones and speakers

When damaged, crushed or exposed to heat inside garbage trucks or at waste facilities, these batteries can ignite quickly and are extremely difficult to extinguish.

Thankfully, there are many convenient battery recycling drop-off locations across the Bathurst region including:

• Woolworths
• Coles
• JB Hi‑Fi
• Mitre 10
• Big W
• ALDI
• IGA Rankin Street
• IGA Marsden Lane
• IGA Windradyne
• The Good Guys
• Bunnings Warehouse
• Total Tools

Before dropping off batteries, it’s important to check which locations accept specific battery types.
Head too https://bcycle.com.au/drop-off/ for more detailed information

A few minutes to safely recycle your batteries could help prevent a serious fire. Please dispose of them responsibly and help protect our community, waste workers and emergency services crews.

This National Volunteer Week we would like to recognise and thank all of our incredible members for the time, dedication and commitment they give to our brigade and community.

From attending incidents and training, to helping at community events, fundraising and supporting one another behind the scenes, our volunteers continue to give so much of themselves to help keep our community safe.

We also want to acknowledge the families, partners and loved ones who support our members. Volunteering often means late nights, missed family time and answering the call when needed most, and that support never goes unnoticed.

Volunteering is more than just giving your time — it’s about being part of something bigger, building lifelong friendships, learning valuable skills and giving back to the community we all call home.

If you have ever thought about becoming a member, now is a great time to get involved. Whether you want to be on the fireground, help support the brigade behind the scenes, assist with community engagement or simply give back to your local area, there is a role for everyone.

If you are interested in joining Eglinton Brigade, please send us a message or come down to the station on Wednesday nights at 7pm to find out more about becoming a volunteer.

To all of our volunteers, thank you for everything you do. Your contribution truly makes a difference every single day.

Crews from Eglinton, Peel, Bathurst, Perthville and Raglan Brigades, along with Fire and Rescue NSW, attended a large tip fire this afternoon, remaining on scene until late into the evening. And a big thank you to our SES friends who provided much needed lighting

Firefighters donned CABA and utilised monitors in an effort to contain and extinguish the blaze. Due to the complexity and scale of the fire, heavy plant machinery was brought in to assist crews by pulling apart sections of the burning pile to help bring the fire under some level of control.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of tip fires and the depth of burning material involved, the fire is likely to continue smouldering for a little while.

A big effort by all crews involved working in difficult conditions throughout the afternoon and evening.

Peel, Eglinton and Bathurst crews were paged to a grass fire on Pymonts Lane around lunchtime today.

Although we are now outside the Bush Fire Danger Period, conditions across our area remain very dry, and even small pile burns can quickly escape and become a grass fire.

If you’re planning to burn:

- Notify the NSW RFS at least 24 hours before lighting up
- Let your neighbours know
- Check weather conditions carefully
- Have water and equipment ready
- Stay with the fire until it is completely extinguished

Submitting a burn notification helps reduce unnecessary emergency responses if smoke is reported.

You can notify your burn here:
https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp?id=guardian_cat_item&sys_id=9e19819bc361f1d04a9cdc31150131ad

Even outside the declared season, safe burning practices protect your property, your neighbours, and your local firefighters.

Today we pause to remember the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country and the families who stand beside them.

On Anzac Day, we reflect on the courage, mateship, and resilience that define the ANZAC spirit, values that continue to guide our communities and volunteers every day.

Eglinton Rural Fire Brigade proudly acknowledges all current and former members of the Australian Defence Force, including those within our own brigade family.

Lest we forget.
