A new national warning system called AusAlert will be used across Australia from October 2026.

AusAlert will be able to send warning messages to your mobile device as push notifications during:
• Natural hazards such as bushfires, floods, and tsunamis
• Public health emergencies
• Biosecurity incidents
• Security threats

Before the system is introduced, it will be tested.

In Victoria, a local test will happen in the Geelong suburbs of Highton and Belmont on Thursday 18 June at 2 pm, followed by a national test on Monday 27 July at 2 pm.

More about the tests and rollout of AusAlert will be shared on the VicEmergency page in the coming weeks.

⛽🔥 SAVING A FEW $$$ AT THE PUMP COULD COST YOU YOUR ENTIRE HOME 🛑🏠

We know fuel prices are crazy high, but hoarding multiple jerry cans of petrol in your garage isn't a "life hack." It is an explosive disaster waiting to happen.

As a fire service, we deal with volatile chemicals daily. We are telling you bluntly: your family home or shed is not an approved bulk fuel storage facility. By treating it like one, you are risking your life, your home, your finances, and us. We don't want our crews unknowingly walking into a house that you've turned into a highly explosive trap.

💥 WHAT FUEL DOES TO A FIRE:

Throwing petrol on a small fire causes an instant, violent explosion. Now, imagine a small electrical fire starts in your garage and reaches those plastic jerry cans while you are sleeping, oblivious.

▫️ It primes an invisible explosion: One loose lid or faulty can allows heavy, invisible petrol vapours to pool on the floor, waiting for a single spark.

▫️ It creates a monster: The fire doesn't spread slowly. The plastic melts, the fuel spills, and it instantly turns your garage into a roaring inferno of huge, unsurvivable heat.

▫️ No time to escape: A normal fire might give you a few minutes to get your family out. Storing large amounts of fuel slams that window shut, swallowing your house in an unstoppable, fast-moving fireball—likely before someone even finishes calling 000.

💸 THE FINANCIAL RUIN: YOUR INSURANCE WILL ABANDON YOU

The Insurance Council of Australia has been crystal clear. As a part of standard policies, you have a duty to disclose anything that materially changes the risk profile of your property to your insurer.

Stockpiling hazardous, highly flammable liquids changes your risk profile.

▫️ Standard policies have strict exclusions for storing bulk hazardous materials.

▫️ If your house burns down and investigators find a makeshift fuel depot, your insurance will be voided.

You thought you were maybe saving some cash at the pump. Instead, you lost your million-dollar home and won't get a single cent back.

⚠️ IS THE RISK WORTH THE REWARD? THE COLD HARD TRUTH.

We are back again laying down the blunt truth on this page for a reason. We are the ones that see the aftermath of things like this. We see the people and families whose lives and finances may never recover. We pull people out of the smouldering wreckage when the worst happens. We give you this information so you understand the brutal reality of what you are risking by storing bulk fuel at your home.

Make no mistake: trying to save money by hoarding fuel is a risk that can cost you absolutely everything.

Our busy bushfire season is sadly far from over. The new seasonal outlook from AFAC News shows increased fire risk during autumn for most of our state.

Victoria has faced a very hot and dry summer season this year already. These conditions are set to continue well into autumn, increasing the potential for fires to start and spread.

However, Victoria continues to be well prepared for any new fires that may start.

Stay up to date with the latest warnings by downloading the VicEmergency app or visiting emergency.vic.gov.au.

Have a fire survival plan ready before a fire starts. Visit the CFA (Country Fire Authority) website for more information.

🔋 LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES -- DID YOU KNOW?? 🔋

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere - in your phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, toys and chargers. They’re incredibly useful, but when damaged, overcharged or used with the wrong charger, they can start fires quickly and without much warning.

A few simple reminders:
• Only use the correct charger for your device
• Don’t charge items on beds, couches or near flammable materials
• Avoid charging overnight or when you’re not home
• Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen or overheating
• If your charger is warm, leave it in a safe & well ventilated location to cool down (don't stick it in a drawer)

If a lithium battery catches fire, it can escalate fast and produce toxic smoke.

It’s worth taking a quick look around your home and making sure everything is charging safely.

Stay aware. Stay safe.
