The Bookor Moort students recently had the privilege of hearing from Elder Harold Humes, a highly respected Noongar Elder.

Through his experiences, students were encouraged to reflect on the importance of cultural understanding, respect, and connection within the wider community. The session helped students deepen their appreciation of Aboriginal perspectives and highlighted the value of listening to and learning from lived experiences.

The experience provided students with valuable insight into culture, storytelling and the importance of preserving and respecting First Nations heritage.

This term, the Years 7โ€“12 Science is Cool Club Academy students recently stepped into the fascinating world of neuroscience through a hands-on sheep's brain dissection experience.

Students explored the structure of a real brain, identified different parts of the brain and their functions and investigated how the brain controls movement, memory and behaviour.

This engaging experience allowed students to extend their scientific knowledge, develop practical skills and experience science in action.

This term, students from the Education Support Program had the exciting opportunity to attend the Pinhole Photography and Portraiture (Neurodiverse) Career Taster at North Metropolitan TAFE.
During the session, students designed and crafted their own pinhole cameras, gaining hands-on experience with traditional photography techniques. They then used the cameras to capture photographs before developing their images in a darkroom, providing a unique insight into the creative process behind film photography.

Students also stepped into the studio to explore a range of photography styles, including beauty portraits, action photography and light graffiti. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to build confidence, creativity and practical skills while experiencing the world of photography in a supportive environment.

Recently, the Year 11 ATAR English students had the opportunity to attend the stage adaptation of The Shepherdโ€™s Hut by Black Swan State Theatre Company, based on the novel by The Shepherdโ€™s Hut.

This performance is directly connected to the Year 11 ATAR English course, as The Shepherdโ€™s Hut is a key text studied throughout the year. Experiencing the story in a live theatrical format provides students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of character, events and themes ahead of their exams, while also exploring how meaning is shaped through dramatic conventions such as staging, lighting, sound and performance. A valuable opportunity to strengthen classroom learning by bringing a key text to life on stage and supporting students in their exam preparation.

At Aveley SC, we are committed to educating and empowering our students to make safe, informed and positive choices.

Recently, our Year 10 students participated in a presentation delivered by the Jack Beasley Foundation in partnership with the WA Police Force. The session focused on personal responsibility, respectful relationships, conflict avoidance and the impact that violence can have on individuals, families and communities.

The presentation formed part of a broader proactive education initiative supporting student wellbeing, safety and positive decision-making. Students were encouraged to reflect on the importance of making considered choices and the role each individual plays in contributing to a safe and respectful community.

As a College, we value opportunities to work alongside organisations such as the Jack Beasley Foundation and WA Police Force to strengthen awareness, promote positive behaviours and support the wellbeing of our young people.

What a fantastic day of collaboration and professional learning as we welcomed school leaders from the Fogarty EDvance School Improvement Program earlier this term.

Visitors explored our school improvement journey from 2018 to today, including classroom walkthroughs across eight classrooms showcasing authentic teaching and learning. School leaders also engaged in a presentation and Q&A focused on our vision, strategic directions and the actions driving high-quality teaching practice and improved student outcomes across the College.

Our visitors spoke highly of the calm, caring learning environments, the strong focus on learning, and the impressive engagement of both staff and students. We are incredibly proud of the culture our College community has built together and grateful for the opportunity to share our journey with fellow educators.

Recently, our Year 9 Drama students had the exciting opportunity to attend Barking Geckoโ€™s performance of The Stones by Tom Lycos and Stefo Nantsou.

Experiencing a professional theatre production supports studentsโ€™ understanding of contemporary Australian theatre practices and performance conventions. As part of their Responding assessment, students will now analyse and evaluate the performance through a formal theatre review, reflecting on the dramatic elements, production choices and the impact of the production on its audience.

This week at Aveley SC, we came together as a College in recognition of National Reconciliation Week.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€˜All Inโ€™, is a reminder that reconciliation is not a spectator sport. It calls on all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day, recognising that meaningful change happens when we all step forward, learn, listen and take action together.

Students had the opportunity to view a video during Homeroom and were invited to contribute to a shared display by writing a message of reconciliation, their name, or decorating hand cut-outs.

These activities provided meaningful opportunities for reflection, connection and learning as we continue to deepen our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives.
