Coffs Coast Surfrider

Coffs Coast Surfrider Coffs Surfrider is a sea-roots organisation dedicated to the protection of our waves and beaches through Conservation Activism Research & Education (CARE).

There was a Surfrider Foundation Coffs Harbour Branch operating in the area in the 1990s. This coincided with the efforts to stop an ocean outfall being built upon Look-At-Me-Now Headland at Emerald Beach about 17kms north of the CBD. The efforts of the community and the Surfrider Branch were successful in protecting the headland and its waters. It was a long journey for everyone involved so in th

e aftermath of their success, the Surfrider Branch dissolved. We feel it is now time to carry forward the great efforts of the 1990s team (such as Mark Whittleton and Greg Hill). At this time we face serious issues such as marine debris and the overuse of plastics, over development along the precious coastline and a water quality issue as a result of pesticide run-off from the sudden growth in local blueberry farms. We are lucky to have close ties with the locally based National Marine Science Centre and their director Steve Smith who specialises in marine debris. We also have a number of active local groups such as Eco-Challenge 100 and Sea Shepherds Marine Debris Campaign to coordinate efforts with. One local Boardriders group have also become more active on the issue of marine debris. We therefore see our role as coordinating the activities of all of these individual groups and making looking after the ocean a responsibility of ever beach goer. There are also a few mining related issues locally that we would like to keep our eye on and be ready to mobilise if necessary. And finally, as ocean lovers, we care about iconic places such as the Great Barrier Reef (even if there is no surf there) and we therefore want to support the efforts of the local Coffs Coast Climate Action Group and help them in their Stop Adani campaign.

Surfriders and went camping at Yuraygir National Park and came home with a ridiculous amount of beach rubbish! They found a MASSIVE pile of trash along a remote beach between Pebbly Beach and Wooli ๐Ÿคฎthat was absolutely disgusting! For our ocean and wildlifeโ€™s sake, ALWAYS pick up your rubbish and dispose of it correctly!

4PM: BEACHED WHALE IN HAT HEAD NOW OFF THE ROCKS

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-16/efforts-to-rescue-whale-washed-onto-rocks-at-hat-head-nsw/12462756

ORRCA has told the ABC that the whale is now off the rocks and is further in the water off the coast of Hat Head.

They believe that the whale is unwell, and they will be monitoring it through the afternoon and into tomorrow.

Due to dangerous conditions off the coast, they could not launch boats today.

------------------------
EARLIER:

A whale has washed ashore near the headland at Hat Head this afternoon.

Joshua Simpson, who is visiting the area, said that the whale is alive, but it's not looking good.

"We've been watching it for the last hour or so, and it's been getting worse and worse," he said.

Joshua told the ABC that local Park Rangers are on site.

Local ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia) are looking into the situation.

We'll bring you more information as it comes to hand.

Big waves on the way! Be careful out there Surfriders!

Latest swell update, still very big with a short period of just over 10-seconds. If predictions are correct, conditions will be dangerous at virtually all beaches. We are also expecting very strong southerly winds between 20 and 30 knots during this event.
