Pumping and draughting training today as our newest members move into the formative stage of the Firefighter course.

This is where the foundations start becoming capability. Repetition. Teamwork. Water on the move. Problem solving under pressure.

Build confidence through doing. Then do it again until it becomes second nature.

Our hearts go out to our friends at Marine Rescue who are today morning the loss of two of their own, who were trying to assist a stricken yacht located in Ballina, Northern NSW, overnight.

Our thoughts are also with the remaining four volunteers who are receiving treatment for minor injuries and to the family and friends of the third victim who sadly was found deceased on the beach following a search. He is believed to have been the sole occupant of the yacht.

Our brigade has been firing on all cylinders over the past couple of days 🔥

While crews were out on the ground supporting the Holsworthy Hazard Reduction last night, and again today at the Bangor Hazard Reduction alongside Sutherland and Illawarra crews, there was another team working just as hard behind the scenes.

Showing multitasking at its finest, our incredible catering team stepped up to keep everyone fuelled and ready for the job. Across the operation they catered for:
• 65 people for lunch
• 25 people for dinner
• 39 people for lunch on Sunday

All meals were prepared by our Engadine catering team and delivered into the field by the Sutherland Logistics crew — ensuring firefighters stayed fed, hydrated, and ready to go.

Operations like these don’t just rely on the crews on the fireground — they rely on the dedicated support teams working tirelessly in the background.

A huge thank you to our catering and logistics members for their outstanding effort 👏

🔥 HAZARD REDUCTION NOTICE 🔥
NSW RFS crews will be conducting Hazard Reduction Burns over the coming days to help reduce bush fire risk and protect our community.

📍 Bertie’s Hazard Reduction (Macarthur District)
🗓 Friday 1st May

📍 Akuna Bangor Hazard Reduction (Illawarra/Sutherland District)
🗓 Saturday 2nd May

Smoke will be visible in surrounding areas, and residents may notice increased smoke, ash, and the smell of burning throughout the day and into the evening.

💡 What you can do to reduce the impact of smoke:
• Keep windows and doors closed where possible
• Bring pets indoors and ensure they have clean water
• Avoid outdoor exercise if smoke is present
• People with asthma or respiratory conditions should follow their health plan and keep medication close by
• Use air conditioning on ‘recirculate’ if available
• Move indoors or to an area with cleaner air if smoke becomes heavy
• Take extra care on the roads – smoke may reduce visibility

📲 Stay informed:
• Follow your local brigade and community pages for updates
• Download the Hazards Near Me NSW app for real-time alerts and set a watch zone.
• Visit the NSW RFS website for more information:

These planned burns are carefully managed and will only proceed under suitable weather conditions. They are an important part of reducing fuel loads and helping protect lives, property, and the environment.

We thank the community for your understanding and our volunteers for their continued hard work. 🚒

This morning our crews responded to a report of a bushfire in the Forbes Creek bushland behind local homes.

On arrival, firefighters located a fire approximately halfway along the trail from Achilles Road. Crews from Engadine were joined by Helensburgh Brigade, and the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished with a portable pump using the creek nearby.

On return to station, our crew was responded to a further fire call in Helensburgh, however we were stood down while en route.

Thank you to the residents who promptly called the Forbes Creek fire in and to the kind neighbour who assisted crews on scene — your support is always appreciated.

Yesterday wasn’t just about crews on the fireground, we also had a dedicated team of volunteers back at the station working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everyone fed during the Loftus and Helensburgh hazard reductions.

Across the weekend, our amazing catering crew prepared over 220 meals, including snack packs to keep crews going throughout the day, fresh and nutritious salad boxes and rolls for lunch, and hearty dinners of shepherd’s pie, chicken pie and mash. And to top it all off …. a delicious (and very popular!) trifle for dessert.

A huge thank you to our catering team for the incredible job they do. Their effort and care make a real difference on long operational days.

If you’re keen to get involved and lend a hand, we’d love to hear from you. Please send us a message and we can share more details on how to join the team.

Yesterday our crews were out on the Loftus/Yarrawarrah Hazard Reduction, working alongside Waterfall, Grays Point, Sandy Point, Loftus, Heathcote, Menai and Illawong brigades with members of Woronora brigade assisting various crews. FRNSW aviation RPAS (drones) team also was on site along with Sutherland Communications Brigade.

The operation was carried out as a low-intensity burn, with a strong focus on protecting the surrounding environment. Crews carefully cleared around known koala habitat trees, which had been identified and marked by NPWS. NPWS staff were also on site throughout the day, guiding operations and overseeing all wildlife considerations.

A great example of agencies working together to reduce risk while protecting our local environment. Well done to all crews involved! 🚒🔥
